According to his daughter, Peggy, he graduated in medicine from Glasgow, "practically at the top of his class" and took the gold medal in literature and English.

According to the Glasgow University Archives:

"Dr. John Steele Smith attended Glasgow University 1894-1900 to study medicine. He graduated MBChB in 1900. He first enrolled in 1894 at the age of 18, his matriculation album entry stating that he was born in New Castleton in Roxburghshire and that in Glasgow he resided 'c/o Mrs Henderson' of 5 Great Western Road, he gives New Castleton [father's address[ as 'home'. In the first year he studied chemistry and zoology; the second: practical botany, junior anatomy and practical anatomy; The third: senior anatomy, practical anatomy, physiology [for which he won a second class certificate] and materia medica; the fourth year does not show what he studied but he moved to 48 Kelvingrove St in Glasgow [he no longer gives his father's address so this may have been when he married c. 1897]; in his final year he studied surgery and midwifery."

According to passenger manifest of the S.S.Letitia (departing Glasgow June 29, 1912, arriving Quebec July 7, 1912), Margt Smith, housewife was 34 years old, born in Scotland, and her final destination was Wilkie, Saskatchewan. She travelled with her 3 children Jane (9), Margt (7) and Robert (4 and 3/4). Both Jane and Margt were listed as "scholar" under Occupation, and both could read and write.
