Notes for Herrman H. Vail: From the Poughkeepsie Courier & Eagle, November 1918. "Captain Herman H. Vail was one of the first Poughkeepsie men to enter the service when the United States entered the war. A graduate of Riverview Military Academy, he trained while a student at Cornell University in the student's corps. In 1916 he entered the officers training camp at Plattsburgh & received his commission. Captain Vail was in command of Co. M., 312th Infantry, stationed at Camp Dix before going overseas. He was in the 78th Division, A. E. F. & was killed in the Battle in the Argonne Forest 26 October, 1918, (only a fortnight before the Armistice). Col. A. V. P. Anderson, 312th Infantry, his commanding officer says Captain Vail died like a true soldier. He writes: ""We were called upon to perform a most difficult task and for several days Captain Vail had commanded his company under severe artillery and machingun fire in a most creditable manner. On October 26th we began to see absolute success in our endeavour (it was secured the following day),and it became necessary to push a flank element forward but covered by careful reconnaissance. By this time we were reduced to practically one officer to a company, so your son took it upon himself to lead a patrol of five men to determine whether it was feasible to advance his company. He had progressed to some little distance toward a locality that had given us some trouble when a concealed machinegun nest suddenly opened on him and his party killing him & three of his men & wounding the other two." |
