Find Family

This family home page is a work in progress. The information was gathered over a number of years with the help of family members and volunteer researchers in Belgium and Luxembourg - to all, I am deeply indebted.

For privacy reasons, some information on living persons is not included on this site, however, I will share data with interested researchers when appropriate. I welcome contact with family members to improve this family page.

Suzanna Eliza Bissen, my maternal grandmother, was the starting point for finding ancestors and descendants. She was born September 22, 1875, in Honville, Province of Luxembourg, Belgium - died September 03, 1943 in Chicago, Illinois.

Ellis Island records indicate she arrived in the USA on March 25, 1902 from her family home in Honville, Belgium and was accompanied by an uncle, Victor Kuborn, a naturalized US citizen and a resident of Chicago. There were five others in the group and all on their way to Chicago.

Suzanna's one year old son, Alfred Bissen, remained in Honville to be raised by her parents. He became an officer in the Belgian army, died in Valognes, France on June 24, 1940 as a result of wounds suffered in a bombardment during World War II.

In Chicago, after acting as housekeeper for Anton Joseph Hamen [born August 15, 1860 in Diekirch, Luxembourg] a widower with two children, she married him [date unknown]. Anton worked as caretaker for Saint Boniface Cemetery on North Clark Street in Chicago. They had nine children: Elisabeth, Anthony, Clara, Matthew, Frank, John, Nicholas, Peter and Theresa.

All the children married and raised families except Frank who had no children. While growing up, several of the boys worked at the Signe Carlson Bakery on West Foster Avenue and, as a result, Matthew, Frank and John became acomplished bakers in their adult life. Anthony worked as a stationary engineer for a large laundry / dry cleaning firm on North Clark Street.

Anton died on September 10, 1925 in Chicago.
