Researching the name Van Inwegen, which originated in the US in New York, Orange County. Also looking for information on the Witherspoon's which are related to my wife. Supposedly, she is a descendant of John Witherspoon, signer of the Declaration of Independence. I haven't been able to verify this yet.

The Van Inwegen's are descendants of Hermanus Barentsen Van Inwegen born around the year 1680 in the Netherlands at Nijmegin--thus the name Van(from)and Inwegen(Nijmegin). Harmanus Barentsen Van Nijmegin(Van Inwegen) was a seafaring man. He was a "bold and resolute" man upon whom his neighbors put much reliance for the defense of their possessions. He is said to have had "red" hair.(Information obtained from "A History of Deerpark in Orange County, NY" by Peter Gumaer, published 1890 by Minisink Valley Historical Society)

According to marriage Record No. 165 of the reformed Church of Kingston, NY Harmanus Barentsen Van Inwegen and Jannetje Cobus were married January 14, 1701 by Dominie David Borepos. The record states that she was the widow of Antoni Swartwout. Harmanus Van Inwegen and Jannetje Cobus had one son, Gerardus and one daughter, Janneke.
