Josie Welch of Eureka, a former school teacher, died at Greenwood County Hospital on March 24, 1984. She was 95. The daughter of John and Elnora Stark, Mrs. Welch was born December 29, 1888 in Climax. She went to grade school there and later received a year of normal training at the Southern Kansas Academy here. After completing her training, she taught in rural schools for three years. On March 24, 1909, Mrs. Welch married Harry Ward. She remarried after his death, marrying Frank Welch on April 12, 1953. He died May 19, 1979. Survivors are two sons, Kenneth Ward, DeRidder, La., and Howar Ward, Eureka; two Daughter, Alice Boren and Gertrude Lawrence, both of Eureka; a stepson Warren Welch, Parsons; four stepdaughters, Neamah Barker, Greeley, Colo., Nerine Atkinson, Fall River, Norma Meyers, Burbank, Calif., and Nina Burr, Salina; a sister, Thelma Cornell, Whittier, Calif.; 16 grandchildren, 13 step grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, 32 step great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and many other relatives. Mrs. Welch was preceded in death by two grandsons, a great-grandson, a brother, Charles, and a sister, May Lane, in addition to her husbands. The funeral service was held the afternoon of March 27, 1984 at Campbell Funeral Home. Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery. A memorial has been established to the Patio Fund at Medicalodge of Eureka. contributions can be left at the nursing home or the funeral home.
