Co. Gabriel Slaughter commanded a regiment of Kentucky rifleman at the Battle of New Orleans and was highly commended in the official dispatches of Andrew Jackson. He received the thanks of the Kentucky Legislature for conspicuous gallantry on that occasion. He was a member of the Kentucky State Senate. He was also Lieutenant Governor and Governor of the State.
