* The van Wynen's of Australia*

Updated November 14, 2006

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Then God said let us make man in our own image in our likeness. So God created man in his own image, male and female he created them. God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it”.
Genesis 1: 1a, 26a, 27, 28a

So began the first recorded history of man.
The recorded past is available for us to discover.
We can define our personal heritage at almost any time it is convenient for us to do so. The recent past and the present are not as easy to discover.

Have you ever wondered why your grandmother and grandfather so treasured a faded photograph, a worn Bible, or that small garden patch in their back yard; or, why the holidays spent with your mother’s family are different from those spent with your father’s family? Remembering and preserving these memories, customs and traditions all establish a family heritage. Many families have already done research necessary to preserve their family story. Many families have not. Many do not know how to begin because their family has been too geographically separated or because they believe it is too late to study their past.

This book is written in the hope that it may help us as the family van Wynen or van Wijnen to preserve some of our history, especially the recent past and present. Our Uncle Jan van Wynen in Utah, United States of America has been very instrumental in tracing the names of our ancestors through his work with the Mormon Church and I thank him very much for the work he has done. My hope is that you will enjoy reading this book and adding to, or correcting any mistakes that may have been made.

Chapter 1
Where it all began……!
The history of the van Wynen family begins in the Netherlands. The earliest ancestor with the name van Wijnen that as far as I have been able to find recorded is a Harmen van Wijnen born about 1595 and married to Goerke Hendriks. Where they were born is not known but it is assumed that they were born in Leiden, South Holland. The next one in line was Dirk Harmensz van Wijnen, born about 1618 in Leiden, South Holland and married to Maria Pijnappels born about 26th June, 1614 in S’Hertogenbosch, North Braband, South Holland. Maria Pijnappels ancestors can be traced back a bit further than the van Wijnen’s going back to a Boudewijn Pijnappels born in approximately 1480
