| I am researching the VANCE family from Lyndon Village (Caribou), Aroostook County, Maine. Thomas "Tommie" Vance was born June 1801 in Ireland (according to the 1900 Census in Caribou, Maine: Edwin Vance - Parents Thomas and Jane Vance were born in Ireland). I would like to obtain more information on Thomas prior to his settling in Maine. I am especially interested in where he came from in Ireland. Thomas came to Lyndon Village(Caribou) with his wife Jane and 10 children from New Brunswick, Canada in 1851-1852. He was a farmer and registered his sheep mark in Caribou April 27, 1852 as a swallows tail in both ears. Jane died June 28, 1881 and Thomas died January 2, 1886. Both were buried in the Lyndon Center Cemetery. Children: Rebecca, Joseph, Robert, David, Richard, Edwin ... Rebecca was born January 1836 and married John T. Parsons (son of Abram Parsons) October 4, 1856. She died April 5, 1858 and was the first to be buried at the Lyndon Center Cemetery. Child: Rebecca. Joseph, Robert, and Richard served in the Civil War. Joseph served with the 15th Infantry, dying in Carrollton, LA on the 18th of July 1862. Robert served with the 7th Maine Infantry dying from complications upon his return home. Richard served with the 1st Cavalry and the circumstances surrounding his death are still unknown (his military records say discharged by order W.D. 28 April 1865). David was born June 1, 1841 in Woodstock, NB, Canada and died in Caribou, ME on November 23, 1873. He married Sarah Jane Smiley, daughter of Sidney & Deborah (Burgess) Smiley of Winslow, ME. Children: Orin, Willard, Martha, Amos, Seneca, Gaylen, and Lilla. Gaylen Sidney married Rachel Cochran of Caribou on October 3, 1896. They moved to Santa Paula, CA along with several other folk from the Caribou area (including Martha who was ill and supposedly died in CA on December 20, 1895). It is said that Gaylen had a citrus ranch and six sons. I am trying to follow up on this branch in California. Lilla is said to have gone to either Minnesota or Montana. Orin, Willard, Amos, and Seneca are all fairly well documented. Amos Howard is my ancestor. Any information would be appreciated. I am also willing to share the information that I have.
