OBITUARY: Obituary from Vero Beach Press Journal Albert Leo Van Auken , 69, of Vero Beach, died 27 Dec 1997, at his residence after a prolo nged illness.He was born 23 Jan 1928, in Plymouth, Pennsylvania., an d moved to Vero Beach 36 years ago from Berwick Pa.Mr Van Auken wa s a superintendent for the Indian River County goverment.He was a U .S. Army vetern of World War ll and a member of Veterns of Foreign Wa rs, Vero Beach. Serviving are his wife of 47 years, Violet: two sons , Floyd Van Auken of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Davia A. Van Auken of Ver o Beach: Two daughters, Mariana Martin , of Cocoa and Ruth Crosby, o f Vero Beach: one sister, Evelyn Fisher, of Hazelton, Pennsylvanian a nd three grand children..In lieu of flowers, the family suggests do nations be made to St Helen Catholic Church, 2085 Tallahassee Avenue , Vero Beach, Florida, 2085, or Fellsmere Historical Church, 31 N. "Retiree's Gardens Grow"from Vero Beach Press Journel Sunday 29 Ma y 1994.At his county home Albert Van Auken's retirement is in ful l bloom.The former Indian River County road and bridge superintende nt takes care of the many flowers, shrubs and trees that are woven in to a series of gardens on his two-acre lot. Van Auken started his wor king after high school as a coal miner in Wilks Barre, Pa.He left t he mines after a short time and joined the Army for 18 months.When h e camme out of the service, he got a job in a feed mill, but afte r a visit to Florida on New Year's Day he knew the Sunshine State wa s for him.."I got sand in my shoes and it was hard to get out," Va n Auken said.He came to Vero Beach because of a friend here. In the ir early years, he and his wife, Violet, lived in a trailer near McKe e Jungle Gardens. VanAuken believes living near the jungle Gardens an d his frequen trips to Cypress Gardens became part of his inspiratio n to later cultivate his own gardens .He went to work for Indian Ri ver Country in the Road and Bridge De partmrnt.His first job was a s a laborer cleaning out the county's ditches.After 15 years, he wo rked his way up to formen and then superintendent--a title that he he ld for another 16 years until his retirement.The Van Aukens have li ved for three decades at their West County home .Both inside and ou t, Van Auken has made the home special in many ways with his carpentr y and gardening skills.His wood working ability recently earned hi m a first place in the Fellsmere craft show with a picture squeand co lorful dock and boat scene that he made by hand . His skills can be s een in the yard with wooden reindeers, a pipe-smoking silhoutte o f a man and wooden children at play on tire swings.Van Auken has do ne plenty of carpentry work inside the house... .He remodeled a bat hroom, built a bar for the screened patio and laid parquet and cerami c tile floors.He also has built a China closet and corner cabinet .Some of the work has been done as recently as weeks ago or as fa r back as decades ago.He and Violet raised four children in their h ouse and now grandchildren visit..In order to protect the house,Va n Auken had roll-down, hurricane-proof shutters installed that can wi thstand a 200-mph wind. He purchased the crank-driven shutters instea d of those with electric motors."If the power goes off. how am I go ing to close the shutters?This way with the cranks, I don't need el ectricity." Van Auken said. Outside the yard has at least 10 garden a reas in the open or under oak trees.Everywhere one turns, there ar e flowers and plants to see climmbing Confederate jasmine, an orchi d house,azaleas, a huge stghorn fern. daisies, six citrus trees, boug ainvilla, joseph's coat, ixora , populars, juniper,bottlebrush tree s and red and white cecar.Van Aukken even has a flowering plant tha t he brought back from a trip to Haawaii. Some of his gardens have ex tra effects, such as a rock fountain that he made hiself, a bell towe r for a climbing plant and the lattice houses for his orchids,The f lowering plants attract awide variety of birds from woodpeckers to hu mmingbirds.On ata ll pole, there is a row of martin birdhouses shap ed like gourds that draw the martins each year.With so many garde n sand a large yard , Van Auken has found it's almost like having a f ull-time job in his retirement to take care of his many plants."Som etimes I spend just about eight hours a day," he said.
