Daniel Van Aken owned one of the best farms in the Neversink Valley, which was afterwards sold by his son Joshua to James D. Swartwout. During the raids of the Tories and Indians under Brant, 22 July 1779, thesavages burned the Machackemeck church and nearly wiped out thesettlement. They visited the school house to the north east of VanAuken' s residence and killed and scalped Jeremiah Van Auken, Daniel's son, and burned the latter's barn.Daniel's wife Leah, escaped by lying concealed in a ditch overgrown with grass and flag plants. The lives of theterrified school children were saved by Brant, who marked the girl's aprons with a substance of black. This the girls transferred to the boysand the Indians seeing the sign of their chieftain passed them unharmed.A marker, destroyed by highway realignment about 1965, located at thepresent day Fort Jervis Countttttry Club read "Site of Fort Van Aukenunsuccessfully attacked by Mohawks and Tories led by Joseph Brant in raidon the valley 20 July, 1779".One of Daniel's sons, Jeremiah, was teaching school at the time ofBrant's invasion in 1779. It was a log schoolhouse which stood upon what wasthen called Penhausen's Land--so called because an Indian chief namedPenhausen had previously had a cleared tract surrounding it of very fineland. The land afterward became the property of Levi Van Etten and hisdependants,It is well down toward Carpenter's Point in Deerpark. This family lived in the Town of Deerpark NY, known as the 'lowerneighborhood" of the Minisink Region. The home of Daniel Van Auken wasdesignated as a fort by order of the Committee of Safety in 1778 at thetime of Brant's Indian raids.
