Revolutionary War soldier, Listed in the abstracts of remolutionary War Pension Files: in the PA line and in the War of 1812 service. BLW #43397-80-50 & BLW #29059-160-55. He enlisted from Upper Smithfield, PA and moved to NY & lived at Phelps, Ontario Co., NY were he enlisted into the War of 1812 service on 6-29-1812.Widow applied for BLW in 1855 at Hudson in Lenawee Co., MI and in 1857 she had moved to Geneva, NY to live with daughter MRS. Lusenc Vandemark. On 12-12-1861 postmaster in Hudson, MI said Margaret had been dead almost a year. Margaret listed as W25827. The War Pension abstract has birthdates of his children all switched around.
On Margaret Westfall's tombstone, it says wife and daughter of a Revolutionary soldier. Took up 600 acres of land near Phelps, New York in 1796.
From the Hudson, MI news article about Wm HH Van Akin's 50th wedding anniversary: decendent of 3 brothers who in 1670 immigrated to New Amsterdam, then over generations, moved to Kingston, NY.
He was reported to be a fine looking man, tall and weighing 200 pounds. Source Adrienne Wiese VA#145.
Also, born in Upper Smithfield in Northampton Co. PA, which later became New Milford, Pike Co., PA.
John served as a drummer boy in the Revolution. In 1778 he volunteered as a musician under Capt DeWitt and Lt. Simeon Westfall in Col Stroud's regiment. He was in no large battle but took part in one skirmish with the Indians.
He was a Captain in the War of 1812.
Col. Stroud is listed in the Library of Michigan #6 source: Stroud, Jacob (Pa). Colonel PA militia in 1775. (Died 1806.)
