Alfred Thomas Vardy b.1848 Yetminster Dorsetshire jumped ship as a cabin boy to settle in Australia aged 18. He married Susan Clark, daughter of John Clark Wheelwright and Jemima Sherwood.Alfred tried his hand at the gold diggings in Walhalla before settling down in Yarram. He purchased land and reared 11 children. Expert farming quickly brought its rewards. The family went on to gradually acquire farms which were showpeices of efficiency and produced one of the most successfull farming communities in Gippsland with farms now stretching from Sth Gippsland to East Gippsland. |
