Researching the following names:Prime: Werner and Sigler
Also: Varner, Warner, Grossnickel, Mosier, Bruther (Brothers) Primarily in and around Pa, Md, Oh and Germany.

The Varner family from which I descend was originated by Hans Adam Warner and Katharina Warner of Massenbach, Germany who came to this country in 1732. They left Rotterdam in 1732, stopped in England for supplies and made their way across the Atlantic Ocean aboard the galley Johnson along with 350 other passengers, crew and Captain David Crokatt. On September 18, 1732 they arrived at Philadelphia.

Eventually they settled in York County, Pennsylvania. One of their many children was Christophel who had a plantation in Frederick County, Maryland. Christophel's son Nicholas left Maryland around 1780 and went to Morrison's Cove, Pa and later to Cambria County, Pa where he and his family were amongst the earliest settlers of Johnstown. Today there are thousands of Nicholas' descendants who call Johnstown home. Every year since 1898 these descendents have held family reunions. In 1998 they will celebrate the 100th anniversay of that first reunion.

My 3rd great grandfather was Justus Varner, one of Nicholas' children who married Salomea Grossnickel whose father was also a local farmer.

I am especially interested in hearing from people who are working on finding German connections. However, I am also working at developing as many primary research documents as possible for this clan. (ie: wills, church records, baptism, confirmation, ommunion, births, tax records and census records. I already have a number of these.)

Key issues:
1.) Nicholas' son John Varner (b abt 1780)one day built a raft
and set sail for Ohio. Once there he raised a family, however, there has been no proof of this.
2.) The families of Hans Adam's sons Jacob and George as well as his daughter Froaney (Bruther) are not researched. Amongst Jacobs possesions at the time of his death was a "large family bible." Locating this bible is sort of a Holy Grail to genealogy researchers.
3.) My personal favorite mystery: My grandfather Charles Varner was an actor in Vaudeville using the stage name Charles McGee. On the day after St. Valentines Day in 1917 he married Marie Suhre, a young and very pregnant dancer. In 1923, while living in Hamilton, Ohio Charles commited an indiscrete act that resulted in Grandma Marie suing him for divorce. Charles disappeared shortly afterwards and he has not been heard from since. Any ideas???

Enjoy!

Jim
