He married (1) CATHARINA BARBARA SIGLER May 01, 1725 in Massenbach, Baden-Wurttemburg, Germany, daughter of HANS SIGLER and MARIA BARBARA. He married (2) CATHERINA WEBER 1763 in St. Matthews Lutheran Church, Mannheim, York County, Pa.

Notes for JOHANN-ADAM WERNER:
Adam Werner, his wife Catharana and their children, John Adam and Catharina emigrated to America in 1732. The September 18th 1732 passenger list of the galley, Johnson lists each of them by name. This is a rare occurence in the records as few ships bothered to list the names of the entire family. This happy occurence positively identifies the Werner family. My research shows that the Werners, Johann Adam, Catharina and daughter Catharina, who are listed regularly in the church records of St. Georges Lutheran Church in Massenbach, Germany up to 1731 completely disappear from the records after that date.

(note: St. George was a Catholic saint, however, Massenbach was owned by a petty Lutheran noble descended through a knightly order. St. George The Dragon Slayer, is traditionally the patron saint of all knights, regardless of their religious affinity.)

Adam, the Patriarch of the American Werners and Varners who descend from him became a relatively prosperous farmer in America. It is not known when the family moved to Germany Township in Adams County (then York Cty), PA. and the years from 1732 to 1755 are unknown to us. But, aside from his 153 acres, his inventory of personal goods is extensive and includes items of considerable value, such as a smooth bore rifle, a grindstone, 4 books, a cow and 8 sheep.

In 1755 as a Highway Commisioner he was responsible for maintenance of roads that were used by farmers to bring their crops to market. This was an important position that was given only to the most responsible of people. It is highly unlikely that Adam was elected to this important position immediately upon arrival in Germany Twp. It is therefore beleivable that the family had live there for a number of years and aquired a good reputation before Adam was elected to office.

Adam also held a number of other elected civil offices. From 1755 on he served consecutive single year terms as Highway Commisioner, Overseer of the Poor, Constable and Tax Collector. Interestingly, in the source of this information, the "Roster of Township Officers, York County, 1749-1800" Adam's surname is spelled "Warner", "Vernor", "Werner" and in 1758 as "Varner", perhaps the earliest, albeit accidental, spelling of the name that was later adopted as the standard spelling of the name by several descending family lines.

Records of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Manheim, York Cty, less than 10 miles north of the Werner farm, a widower named Adam Werner married a single woman named Catharina Weber in 1763.
No other church records for Adam or Catharina or birth or marriage records of their children have been found. Adams will was recorded and executed by his son Jacob who inherited the bulk of Adam's estate including the farm. Catharina, whether his original spouse or a later spouse was living at the time of Adam's death in June or July of 1775.

Notes for CATHARINA BARBARA SIGLER:
Catharina's baptism sponsors were Johan Zeller (A vicar) of the town of Lauffen on Neckar, Lorentz and Catharina Zalman of Heilbronn and Hans Andreas Bourke.

Below Catherina's name in her baptism record in the Nordheim Kirchenbuch appears the word "America" which is written in a handwriting style different than that of the writer of the original record. This indicates that at some later time she left for America and the Pastor at Nordheim wrote the noation about her leaving in the baptism record. This notation method was used repeatedly by the pastor who served the church from the lte 1720s through the 1750s.

The May 1, 1725 Massenbach marriage record of Catharina and Johann Adam Werner lists Catharina by the same name as that given in her baptismal record. However, subsequent entries in the Massenbach Kirchenbuch gives her name as either Maria Catharina or simply as Catharina. Research has borne out that Catharina, at least in Massenbach and for unknown reasons, was referred to by both names. Other women in the Kirchenbook suffer from the same naming problem. Perhaps the Pastor, not recalling the womens correct names, simply used "Maria" out of convenience.

In 1732 Catharina emmigrated to America with her husband "Hans" Adam and their children Catharina and Johann Adam. All of their names are shown on passenger list of the Johnson. The Johnson, under the command of Captain Crokatt, sailed from first from Rotterdam to Deal, England and finally to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where they arrived in October 1732.

Except that she bore 5 more children, the activities of Catharina during the years from 1732 to 1775 are not known. Future research will hopefully find more information concerning of this American Matriarch.

There is evidence that she died after arriving in Pennsylvania in 1732 but prior to 1762 when an Adam Werner married Cathrina Weber in St. Matthews Lutheran CHurch in Mannheim, York County, Pa.
