Includes NotesNotes for John Clarence Collier:
John Collier served in the Navy aboard the U.S.S. California in Pearl Harbor when it was bombed. The ship went down and John and several other shipmates were below the water line. They survived by holding on to overhead pipes, as the water level inside the ship was about 1 1/2 feet from the ceiling level. One of the men went insane during this time, and they tied his arms to the pipes to keep him from drowning. After three days divers found them by banging on the ship hull trying to find survivors. John had been listed in action, and during this three days his hair had turned completely white. He was flown home to Ashland, where without notice he knocked on the front door of the family home. His 1/2 sister, Mary Eloise answered the door, thought she was seeing a ghost, and promptly fainted. Many years later John was in a bar in Florida and overheard a couple of men talking about Pearl Harbor. One of them had been one of the search and rescue team who had rescued John. After that, they kept in touch for many years.

John was a blue crab fisherman on the St. John river in Florida for many years until he died.[shalimar.FTW]
