The content of this webpage will take the visitor into a journey in time following the path laid by my ancestors and those of my relatives. Some "trails" are longer that others, some running only 4 generations while others run 8 or more. Yet along them you will crisscross the Island in every direction: north, south, east, west, and center.

The lineages presented in this webpage include those of the VELASCO, CERRA, SURO, and NAZARIO. Also included are other surnames that I have traced in my genealogical research, like ALMENAS, BIRD, and VIRUET. All of these are presented mainly in GEDCOM Trees and in related HTML files. Yet these and many more totally unrelated surnames can be found in the regional databases. These "by-products" of my research are compilations of information that I've extracted from various sources, mainly the US Federal Census (1910, 1920, and 1930), the LDS International Genealogical Index, church records on microfilm from Yauco's Parroquia Nstra. Sra. del Stmo. Rosario, and civil records from Añasco, Orocovis (formerly Barros) and Sabana Grande.

This webpage is a repository of a research work on my family history. It is a work in progress and as such not nearly complete. The information presented herein represents both data as I have found it and the products of my analysis of said data. I cannot guarantee in any way the accuracy of the information, but I can share the data sources so you can look it up and interprete it yourself. If you have questions or comments about the content of this site or if you want to contribute to this research, please send your comments to and write (or copy) "Feedback on Surnames from Puerto Rico homepage" in the subject line.

  • Three Branches of LUGO-VELASCO from Yauco (404 KB)
These individuals were identified in the 1910 Federal Census. Two of these "Lugo Velazco" - María Petrona and Juan Teodosio - were full siblings and two more were each from different set of parents; the parents of the remaining one - Rufino - are yet be found thus leaving the possibility of being related to one of the three branches identified so far; this needs further research and verification. Also, is not known if any of these LUGO-VELASCO branches or any of these individuals is related to Jose de Velasco Sanchez. -- ver 1.0 @ 9Apr06
  • The VELASCO-SOLTERO progeny from SW Puerto Rico (496 KB)
The VELASCO-SOLTERO progeny from Puerto Rico is believed to be the main trunk line of descendants from José de Velasco Sánchez and Lucía Quijano Ruiz. Born and likely raised in Añasco, Vicente VELASCO QUIJANO - son of José Velasco (a.k.a. Josef Belasco) and Lucía Quijano - eventually arrived in Sabana Grande where he married María Cristina SOLTERO SEGARRA, who was from Cabo Rojo and daughter of Mauricio Antonio SOLTERO SEGARRA and María del Carmen SEGARRA GARCIA. Of their children only four - Quiterio, Vicente, Guillermo Eloy, and José Rosendo (who married and settled in Yauco) – are known to have married, carrying through their descendants this VELASCO lineage to our days for a time span of more than 225 years of continuous presence in Puerto Rico. - ver 1.0 @ 18Dec2006
