Notes for Caroline Beck: Birth was recorded in the Schiltigheim Civil Registry; No. 32, Date : 18 Apr 1837; Child's Name: Caroline Beck; Father: Charles Beck, age: 33; Mother: Anne Marie Riehl, age: 30. A note penned onto Caroline's birth record states that she died on 20 Mar 1912. The actual death record has yet to be found. Caroline's Birth record records her father as Charles Beck (age: 33) and her mother as Anne Marie Riehl (age: 30). Her marriage record records these same names. No record of the marriage of Charles Beck and Anne Marie Riehl nor a birth record for Anne Marie Riehl has been found as yet. However, the marriage of Charles Beck (age: 30) and Marie Catherine Riehl (age: 27) was recorded on 31 Mar 1834. The birth record for a Charles Beck is recorded on 26 Jun 1804 and for a Marie Catherine Riehl on 7 Feb 1807. There is no doubt that the birth records are for the same people who appear in the 1834 marriage record; the parents are the same for both cases. The question is: "Is the couple who were married in 1834 the parents of Caroline?"
There is evidence supporting both sides of the question: Supporting the claim that they are the parents are 1) the fact that no marriage record for Charles Beck and Anne Marie Riehl has been found, nor has Anne Marie's birth record. 2) The ages of the known Charles and Marie Catherine are in reasonably agreement with those of Caroline's parents. 3) Marie Catherine's mother's name was Anne Marie. 4) Charles and Marie's first child, Marie Salome (b: 20 Jan 1835), married a Frederic Kissel (19 Apr 1856). The record of the marriage of Caroline to Jean Boell shows witness #3 to be "Kissel, Frederic, Brother-in-Law of the Bride"
Evidence against the claim is 1) both Caroline's birth record and marriage record state that her mother is Anne Marie whereas both the birth record and marriage record of Marie Salome state that her mother is Marie Catherine. A consistent difference. This consistency holds true for other children as well (See Charles, b:18 Apr 1837 and Jaques, b:16 Sep 1838). 2) There is no explanation for why Marie would be Marie Catherine sometimes and Anne Marie other times and yet be consistent as to which name she used with which child.
These arguments are far from conclusive. The Frederic Kissel (Brother-in-Law) relationship is strong evidence in favor of the claim, but the consistent use of different names is strong evidence against the claim. Until evidence to the contrary is found, Charles Beck and Marie Catherine Riehl will be considered to be Caroline's parents. The fact that this relationship is still questionable should always be kept in mind.
Caroline's birth record has her date of death (20 Mar 1912) noted in the margin. This date has not been verified.
