“Samuel Pearman died intestate
in 1761. An Inventory taken after his death has a total value
of just over £482. He obviously
farmed Mercote as a traditional mixed farm, having both a lot
of stock, including 62 sheep,
and crops both in the ground and harvested. The house
consisted of a hall, with two
cellars thereto, a kitchen, two parlours, four bedrooms and
various other chambers. He owned
many items, including a clock and looking glass, there
were three spinning wheels with
yarn, and in the cheese chamber were over four hundred
cheeses!” (Dee Tracey, Mercote Hall, BM Vol IV, p41)
The lease of Mercote Hall passed
to Samuel’s youngest son, William.

We know Samuel had a son named Thomas
who married Phebe
Robinson on 26
Dec 1750 in Berkswell.

The date of the marriage
suggests that Thomas was born c1722, but the only record
of a son being born to Samuel
and Elizabeth around this time is the baptism of John
Pearman. It is possible the
incumbent made a mistake and John and Thomas are the
same.
