Samuel Pearman (bap 20 Feb1691 – bur 15 Mar 1761) born in Clent,

Worcestershire, the son of Richard and Cicely Pearman. He moved to Berkswell with

his family in about 1736 where he leased Mercote Hall.

Item: Lease for 21 years from John Mathew of Whistones, in Claines, Worcs. Esq. to Samuel

Pearman of Clent, Staffs. Esq., of Murcoat Hall, late in occupation of Elizabeth Greenaway

(CR2440/5/11, 28 Jan 1735/6, WCRO)

File: Original bundle of deeds relating to the Murcote estate after John Mathew’s death

Item: Lease for a year from Sir John Eardley Wilmot of Great Ormond St. Kt. PC to Sir Hew

Dalrymple of N Berwick, Bt., and Sir Sampson Gideon of Belvidere Kent, Bt., of messuages at

Mercote and Berkswell; viz, the messuage and lands of 230 acres now in the tenure of

Samuel Pearman… (CR2440/6/1-7, 1742-1776, WCRO)

Samuel was buried on 15 March 1761 in Berkswell.

“Samuel Pearman died intestate in 1761. An Inventory taken after his death has a total value

of just over £482. He obviously farmed Mercote as a traditional mixed farm, having both a lot

of stock, including 62 sheep, and crops both in the ground and harvested. The house

consisted of a hall, with two cellars thereto, a kitchen, two parlours, four bedrooms and

various other chambers. He owned many items, including a clock and looking glass, there

were three spinning wheels with yarn, and in the cheese chamber were over four hundred

cheeses!” (Dee Tracey, Mercote Hall, BM Vol IV, p41)

The lease of Mercote Hall passed to Samuel’s youngest son, William.

We know Samuel had a son named Thomas who married Phebe Robinson on 26

Dec 1750 in Berkswell.

The date of the marriage suggests that Thomas was born c1722, but the only record

of a son being born to Samuel and Elizabeth around this time is the baptism of John

Pearman. It is possible the incumbent made a mistake and John and Thomas are the

same.

Phebe Robinson the daughter of James Robinson and Sarah Butler. She was

baptised 12 May 1731 in Arley, Warwickshire, and died Jan 1776 in Berkswell. (JV)

Anna Maria Palmer was born 5 Sep 1735, baptised about 26 Sep 1735, the

daughter of Edward Palmer and Damaris Kirkham. She died on 2 Nov 1777 in Blind

Hall and was buried 5 Nov 1777 (p58 BM Vol IV).

“On 9th October 1750, Anna Maria Palmer, aged 15, was married at Holy Trinity, Coventry, to

Samuel Palmer… Between 1750 and 1777, Samuel and Maria Pearman had at least 12

children, nine of whom were baptised at Berkswell. Anna Maria died after giving birth to

twins… in November 1777, at the age of 42.” (Connie Fell, Blind Hall, p58 BM Vol IV)

William Pearman

William was born c1734 and took over the running of the farm on his father’s death

in 1761. He married Sarah Burton on 24 Jun 1762 in Arley, Warwickshire

(IGI/M039701) and died in 1792

Sarah Burton was the daughter of Ambrose Burton and Mary Claridge. She was

baptised 2 Feb 1740 in Arley, Warwickshire (JV, no record found). She was the sole

executor of her husband’s will, and after her death in 1826 the lease of Mercote Hall

passed to her son, Josiah.

Thomas and Ann Brittain. She had an illegitimate son, Josiah Pearman, buried 6 Dec 1801.

1.1 William Pearman, farmer, died 1792; Will dated 28th January 1792, Probate 1794

Leaves to “loving wife Sarah Pearman” all household goods and farming stock, money and

securities… to bring up and educate sons and daughters already born or to be born; Josiah

Pearman, Ambrose Pearman, Samuel Pearman, John Burton Pearman, Sarah Pearman and

Ann Pearman.

After decease of wife, to sons and daughters equally when they attain 21 years

For some reason, the L/A had to be dealt with (a) at the Bishops Court of Lichfield on 31st

March 1826 and (b) at Coventry, also on 31st March 1826

The Administrators were Josiah Pearman of Berkswell, farmer, and John Burton Pearman of

Packwood, Warwickshire, farmer.

1.3 Josiah Pearman, of Murcote Hall, Berkswell, farmer (Probate 1828)

Give and desire all freehold and copyhold lands situate on Bradnocks Marsh in the parish of

Berkswell and all other my freehold and copyhold estates… unto my brother John Pearman of

Packwood, farmer, and Mark Pearman of City of Coventry, gentleman, as Trustees, to pay

interest, dividends and profits of said personal estate to wife Hannah for life as long as she

remains a widow to enable her to bring up, maintain and educate my children Luke Pearman,

Mary Anne Pearman, Jane Pearman, Christiane Pearman and Eliza Pearman… then to

children as they attain 21 years.

If Hannah marries again, give her £60

Trustees to carry on farming business, if landlord agrees, until son Luke is 21 then he can

take over with agreement of landlord. If landlord not agreeable, Trustees to acquire some

other farm or farms for use of wife and children…
