This homepage is lovingly dedicated to my parents, Henry Robert and Alma Johnson.Henry was born in Ontario, Canada and was the son of Chester Hanabel and Eliza (Fenton) Johnson. Both of my parents have passed away but how I wish they were here today to share in the information that I with the collaboration of others have discovered about our family history. I was always interested in hearing the family stories they would tell - I could never hear them too many times.I continue to relate them to my family. The stories and the wonderful memories of family outings, canoe trips, camping, picnics, visiting relatives in Ontario and the U.S. have enriched my life and instilled a deep interest and commitment to things pertaining to the family. This and my love of history are probably the reasons I continue to search for lost branches of family of the past. I am continuing in the research begun by Muriel (Johnson) Hall whose diligence not only introduced our family to ancestors unknown to us but who compiled a current family history and tree into two books "As the River Bends" and "As the River Bends, vol. 2".She discovered that Daniel Johnson's parents were Isaac and Hannah (Nichols) Johnson.I had always been told that my ancestors were United Empire Loyalists and that they settled in Missisquoi County, near Lake Champlain after the American Revolution.Muriel found documents that pertained to Isaac and Hannah and named Daniel and his siblings (Hannah, Clarinda, Ira, Lucinda and Arianda Adelia).Isaac and Hannahowned 100 acres located at Lot 5, Concession 9, Caldwell Manor, Seigniory of Foucault.Muriel also found a land patent document for their son, Ira Johnson, 100 acres located at Lot 6, Concession 10, Stanbridge Township. A further search found that Daniel owned Lot 3, Concession 9, St.George Parish (formerly Caldwell Manor).Daniel eventually purchased further property which extended his land right to the shore of Lake Champlain.Much of the information contained on this homepage for the Johnson family came through Muriel's efforts. During the past few years, I have discovered through my own search that Hannah Nichols parents were Susannah (Clarke) and John Nichols.John and Susanah were United Empire Loyalists, originally from Rhode Island who later made their way through Massachusetts and New York, eventually settling on 100 acres in Caldwell Manor, Quebec (Lot 14, Concession 9) along with other loyal British supporters who came to Canada after the American Revolution.Dr. Tom Clarke of Massachusetts responded to a querythat I had posted on a Quebec bulletin board and contacted me.It was he who sent to me the family tree of the Clarke and Nichols families back to 1586.Dr. Clarke has since passed away.He is sorely missed and has my gratitude forever.Another very important person to this research is Diane Brigode.Diane is a descendent of Mary Nichols, sister to Hannah.Diane has generously shared copies of documents and limbs to her family tree which tie into mine. Since then I have met through internet search other family members. The Johnson family Bible included the children of John and Dinah Rember - a daughter, Mary, was my Great Grandmother and the wife of Daniel Johnson.I have learned that Dinah's maiden name was Wilson and that she and John plus at least one other brother (Robert) to John were from Yorkshire, England and that they arrived in Canada ca. 1826.Both John and Dinah are buried in the Hawley Cemetery at Aird, Quebec - as is Isaac Johnson, his daughters Margaret and Juliana. Another contact through a query board is helping to complete the family outline of the Vincent Fenton family of Hamilton, Ontario. Your help in filling in the "spaces" is appreciated.
