9. SPENCER⁴ FAUBION (JACOB³, JACOB², HANS JOSEPH¹)^142,^143,¹⁴⁴ was born Abt. 1787 in Fauquier County, Virginia ¹⁴⁵, and died Bef. 1860 in near Barry, Clay County, Missouri ¹⁴⁶. He married FRANCES HOLLAND¹⁴⁷ March 6, 1806 in Clay County, Missouri ^148,¹⁴⁹, daughter of JOHN HOLLAND and MARY MCPIKE. She was born Abt. 1788 in Tennessee ¹⁵⁰, and died Unknown in Missouri¹⁵⁰.

Sarah Faubion Pangle lists this marriage of Spencer and Frankie Holland to a son of William Faubion and Miss Perthenia Ayers. She Has the following information listed on page 7 of her book;

Spencer Faubion son of William and Perthenia Faubion was born about the year 1805, near the town of Bridgeport, Cocke County, Tennessee, on the French Broad River. Farming was his occupation, agriculture being almost the only occupaion open to the pioneer of East Tennessee at that time. He was married at an early age, to Miss Frankie Holland. They reared a large family, there being thirteen children. Hoping to improve his condition financilly and give his children better educational advantages, he moved his family in the year 1837 to Clay County Missouri, and settled near the town of Berry. Here he purchased a farm of one hundred and sixty acres. a school house was erected on his place. In his honor it was called Faubion school house; he also donated the land for the cemetery, and here with his wife and one or two children he has found his last resting place. His religious belief was Presbyterian.

When you look at the marriage date of Spencer and Frankie, it is easy to see where this marriage belongs. As to wheather or not William and Perthenia had a son named Spencer, this has not been determined, other than this document produced by Sarah Pangle, I have seen no other proof of him.

Spencer Faubion, born 1787 in Faquier County, Virginia. Occupation Farmer. He married Frances Holland.

He moved to Missouri in 1836, buying 150 acres from Silas & Amanda Jones on the NW1/4 of Section 8, Township 51, Range 32. He sold a portion to the school district on June 11, 1837 which erected a school named in his honor "Faubion School." He probably moved to Missouri because of favorable reports from relatives already there. According to a family story, he immigrated to Missouri to join with cousins and members of the Meredith family, immigrating to Missouri via Indiana.

The 1850 federal census in Gallatin Township, Clay County, Missouri, shows Spencer Faubion, 63 years, farmer, real estate valued at $1,600, born Virginia; Franky (age 62, female, born Tennessee); Jacob (age 31, born Tennessee); Spencer (age 27, born Tennessee); Hezakiah (age 19, born Tennessee); Jane (age 21 , born Tennessee); Justice, John F. (age12, born Missouri).

Spencer was a farmer; he and Frankie had a large family and the need to provide better educational advantages for the children, and the need to improve his own financial condition were deciding factors in their move into Missouri in 1836. On 9 August 1836 Spencer purchased from Silas O. Jesse and his wife Amanda the NW 1/4 of Section 8, Township 51, Range 32, consisting of 150 acres. (Clay County Deed Bk.E, p.243). He and Frankie sold a portion of the land to the school district on 13 June 1837 (Clay County Deed Bk.E, p. 170); and, according to Pangle, a school erected on this land was called Faubion School in his honor. They lived in Gallatin Township in 1850 and are not found in 1860.

The William J. Meredith letters of the early 1900s say that Spencer and his family joined up with a number of cousins and members of the Meredith families and emigrated to Indiana, later moving into Missouri to settle. We have no proof of this legend, and believe the Spencer Faubion family moved to that area of Missouri because they had received favorable reports from relatives who were already settled there. It is also possible that the Indiana "legend" comes from stories told of this group's journey to Missouri by way of the Buffalo Trace which traversed the southern portion of the states of Indiana and Illinois.

Frankie Holland was the mother of thirteen children, according to Pangle, who mistakenly believed this family belonged to Spencer, the son of William and Rosannah Perthenia Ayres Faubion. We have no information on Frankie Holland other than the fact that some members of her family did migrate to Indiana.

From Faubion and Allied Families, page 577:

Elias Faubion, according to the Meredith legend, was the oldest son of Spencer and Frankie, and a wagoner who freighted supplies for the settlement to and from Baltimore (Maryland). It is told here that he was preparing for a freighting trip to Baltimore just before the youngest son of this family was due to be born, and when asked by his mother, he suggested the name Hezekiah. As this legend goes, it was on this trip Elias died of yellow fever at Baltimore, never seeing his young brother and it is told that William Meredith, who later married Elias' sister Nancy in Clay County, Missouri, took Elias' place in the freighting business. Pangle says Elias died in 1833, but Hezekiah was born in 1831.
