 Includes NotesNotes for Griffin Mitchell:
Barry Co., MO in the 1860 and 1870 census, and were living in Lawrence Co., TN in the 1840 and 1850 census.

Thomas Griffin Mitchell lived near Granby, MO at the beginning of the Civil war. He had two sons Wm Riley and Jasper who were born and raised in TN. They came to MO from TN. Wm Riley Mitchell was a strong democrat and came to Madison co AR at the beginning of the civil war. His brother, Jasper stayed in MO and fought in the war. He was a strong Republican. Both Jasper and Wm Riley came through the war. According to Mrs. McMillian (Wm Riley's daughter) Jasper would come from MO to visit them and he and Wm P would get into arguments over politics every time they met. Finally they agreed they would never mention politics again and afterwards their visits were peaceful.

Mrs. McMillian mentioned that she had heard one of the brothers (Billy) ask the other (Jasper) "Would you have killed me if you had came upon me during the war?" To which Jasper replied, 'No! And I wouldn't have let anyone else kill you either'" Jasper and "Uncle Billy" Mitchell's father Griffin was a Whig. He didn't fight on either side but was killed near Granby by the Republicans. (This part and next paragraph was told by Jewel) His son Jasper was supposed to have killed the fellow that killed his father one night in camp. He had come to camp bragging about killing the old man Mitchell. Jasper, who was mending shoes at the time, heard the fellow bragging. Jasper killed him with a shoe stand or (this Word?) Jasper then ran away and didn't go back to camp.

(Cinda confirmed this part but thought it happened in Mo) During the war Uncle Billy and his cousin Jim Hutchison were working on Dry Fork Creek, near Shiloh AR). The other party came upon them and Jim and Billy ran-one one way and one the other. The other party shot and killed Jim. Billy fell down and pretended to be dead. The other party left. Billy hid out for three months, unable to get home. Someone told his wife, Milly about the shooting and she thought Billy was dead for three months, until he was able to make his way home.

Mrs. McMillian said that right after the Civil war Billy Mitchell traded property in MO to Sarah Combs Lane (widow of Carol Lane) for property near Kingston, AR. At one time Billy owned a great deal of land on Dry Creek and slowly sold it off. Tip(Jasper) and Mary Mitchell's family grew up on a portion of the old Mitchell place. Pete and Mirt Smith reared their family on another portion of this property. Billy Mitchell was born 1 Aug 1825 and died 5 Feb 1912 on Dry Creek (on place later owned by Otto Smith) He is buried at Kingston cemetery, one row over from Tip Mitchell's grave. His first wife was Milly Jane Barnett who died 27 Dec 1879 (buried in Kingston).
