Basel was an episcopal see or seat of a powerful bishop. It was also home of a university and an early publishing center. It was the scene of the great reforming Council, 1431-1444 of the Catholic Church in which many of the problems of the Moravians were given attention.

Hans was a naturalized citizen and innkeeper of the Hotel Roessli at Muttenz near Basel, Switzerland. A roessli is a merry-go-round figure and may be translated as white or black horse.

Hans came to Muttenz between 1575 & 1585 from Loerrach-Stetten across the Rhine River from Basel which is in the Herrschaft Roetteln within the Markgrafschaft of Durlach in the Grand Duchy of Baden, Germany. He was probably an Anabaptist and they held their meetings in Black Forest

In Muttenz,the family went to St. Argobast Church.
