"The picture of George Samuel was made from a post card picture he had made in Oklahoma. He was living around the Red Oak area with a family named "Muse" My father (U.J. Shore, George's grandson) knew Mary Muse and talked with her often before her death. Her husband and George loved to hunt "coons". I'm not sure why he lived there with them, it was between marriages I believe. I have both these pictures and the one of the family is on their farm in front of the old barn that had fallen down before they moved there. They bought this land from the Indians, I have that deed also. Aunt Ruby said it had not been taken care of so George had allot of work to do...... Debby "Shore" Oakes

Melungeon Heritage: Where to Start

What is a Melungeon? Good question. The term is applied to a widespread pool of people generally living in the southeastern United States whose roots include a mixture of Native Americans with
immigrants from Portugal, northern Africa, and the eastern Mediterranean. The somewhat vague nature of the exact roots of any single Melungeon means that the term is often applied to just about anyone in the southeastern part of the U.S. with mixed-race ancestry.

The Melungeon Heritage Association uses webspace from the University of Virginia to assist htose who are seeking help finding their Melungeon roots. They have an excellent FAQ (answers to Frequently
Asked Questions) on Melungeons and the work of the Melungeon Heritage Association, online information about the Melungeons and their history, and numerous links to other websites with valuable
information for those with Melungeon heritage.

Subject: Re: SHORES

I got the pleasure of meeting Aunt Nola and Lucy (I think) my senior year of school 1976. Mother has a
cassette recording of Aunt Nola telling about the family. I can remember clearly setting at her dinner
table- She asking her housekeeper for the time- S he was awaiting the Ark. Razorbacks Kick -off.Aunt Nola finished her mael fast and ran to her frontroom, pulled her portable tv up to her rocker, and started
to yell"Soooooie-sooooie hogs, beat them boys!" I thought I would laugh myself to death. She would not
talk to us about family until the game was completly over. That I will never forget. I am going to Mother's for Mother's day and I am taking her copies of all my email- so I will ask her about the other Aunts and Uncles. Tina
