July 10, 2004                   subj: Our Harris lines

Hello, Dawna,

If I seem informal, it's because I'm 85 and counting. I'm sorry not to have answered your e-mail sooner. My zeal and energy must be flagging a bit. I was glad to hear from another member of the Harris clan, and wiil try to be of some help. My Harris ancestry is: James Harris and Cena Hackworth, James Meridith Harris, Hezekiah Bradbury Harris, James Wesley Harris, and finally my mother, Esther Lenora Harris who married Frank Irvin Neal. I will be glad to share gedcoms and photos of such lines of my family as you wish.

I retired in Sacramento from the Bureau of Reclamation at the end of 1978 after 30 years of service. After WW II I went back to the University of Arkansas to complete work on my BSCE that had started in 1939, was interrupted after the sophomore year by marriage, about a year of work in surveying for new Army camps in AR and CO, and followed by 3 years Army service in the US and France.

Work in the USBR began in Friant, CA in 1948, then to Lindsay in 1950, and to Sacramento in 1956. Our work required some travel - to Washington, DC, Denver and regional offices. My wife died in February 2000. We had two children, Karen, who died in 1999, and James Alan, who lives in OR with his wife. Karen's son, David N. Greenwood, lives in Yuba City, with wife Stacia and Stepdaughter, Hannah, Daughter Rachel, 3, and Son James David, born December 2003. Karen's daughter, Amy, is single. Both grandchildren work for the County of Sacramento, David as a deputy.

My genealogy program is Legacy Family Tree, 5.0 (Windows), and my main photo-editing program is Photoshop Elements 2. I toy with the idea that the big Photoshop program might be worth the trouble of learning it.

I must say your family data printouts put mine to shame. My family history database was started late in life, and has been gathered in haste, with verification of much data left for younger and more dedicated members of our big extended family. Within its limitations, the database should be useful as a guide. I have been especially eager to collect and share family photos, and greatly enjoy editing all kinds of pictures. May 21-22 I drove down to Big Pine to see Mt. Whitney and the Alabama Hills at its base. I.was able to get up to the Bristlecone Pines area, too. The last mile to the best pines was still snowed in (above 11,000 feet), and there was a little fresh snow on the ground. That Owens Valley trip needs to be repeated at a better season for pictures. My Digital Rebel did a better job than the Canon SLR film camera. Some 300 movies and TV episodes have been made in the Alabama Hills, including Gunga Din and High Sierra.

While my database maintenance is poor, a specialty has been the demonstration of family histories generated in html with linked photos and burned to CD-ROM. There was a niche that was unfilled around here for some years, so I give group demos of that process onscreen, also on digital editing. A surprising number of people have not had the time or inclination to try those useful procedures. The convenience and universality of the format make the history on CD ideal for introducing family members to genealogy.

I look forward to adding your family line to my data and to cooperating with you however I can.

James Q. Neal, 3rd great grandson of James Harris
