Peter Larrance Testament (transcribed by Carol Lawrence Vidales)

As death is certain and life precarious and being in my (eightith?) year but possessing tolerable health and a sound mind deem it prudent as well as my indisputable right to dispose of my property in that manner that seemeth good to me In the first place I would in all sincerety commit my soul and body to him who gave them and in the second place I wish all my just debts to be paid The balance of my property I give and bequeath as follows viz. to all my grand children by my daughter Nancy Bramblet I give and bequeath Elias a negro man to be sold and the money to be equally divided amongst them. Wm. Bramblet the father of these children had possession of said Elias when I heard of him last to Elizabeth Baker my grand daughter I give and bequeath two hundred dollars to my grand daughter Polly Fields I give and bequeath one hundred and fifty dollars and feather bed with the usual quantity of clothing for the same to my grand daughter Malenda Fields I give and bequeath one hundred dollars to my grandson Amos Fields I give and bequeath one hundred dollars to my grandson Dudley Fields I give and bequeath one hundred dollars to my daughter Jane Selman I give and bequeath a negro man named Daniel now in her possession during her natural life at her death to be sold and equally divided amongst her children to my son John I give and bequeath the lot of land on which he now lives containing eighty acres more or less during his natural life at his death to be sold and equally divided amongst Jne Selman's children to my daughter Winafred Barby I give and bequeath the lot of land on which I now live containing eighty acres more or less during her natural life at her death it is to belong to her child or children ___(?) they die without children the land is to be sold and the money to be equally divided amongst my children then living all the balance of my property to be sold and divided amongst three of my children namely Mayson Larrance my daughter Sally Priest wife of Mayson Priest and my daughter Susanna Priest wife of George Priest first paying all just debts and funeral expences My son Mayson Larrance and my son in law Mayson Priest I appoint my executors witness my hand and seal this 9th day of July 1819

At a court held for Culpepper County the 16th day of October 1826

This paper writing purporting to be the last will and testament of Peter Larrance dec'd was exhibited to the court and proved by the oath of John Hancock one of the witnesses thereto and ordered to be established as the Testament of the said Peter Larrrance dec'd. And on the motion of Mason Priest one of the Executors therein named certificate is granted him for obtaining a probat (sic) thereof in due form he having made oath thereto and given bond and security according to law and at a court held for said county this 19th day of March 1827 this said last will and testament of Peter Lawrence dec'd was again exhibited to the court and John Fletcher one of the subscribing witnesses thereto having departed this life Robert (Iward?) was ___(?) in open court and deposed that the signature of the said John Fletcher was his own handwriting and the said will having been heretofore proved by the other subscribing witness thereto the same is ordered to be recorded and established as the last will and testament of the said Peter Larrance dec'd.

Will book K, p409-410 Culpepper Co. VA inventory & appraisement of the estate of Peter Larrance, dec'd.

The inventory included the following Negroes:

boy Elias; boy Moses; woman Dolly & her child Sally; boy Ashby; boy Rhoda; woman Belly; girl Belly; woman Hannah; man Reuben; man John' boy Ralph; boy Daniel; boy Reuben; woman Mema & her child, both sickley.

Also included were a bay horse, sorrel horse, sorrel mare, black mare, 3 red cows, 1 bull, 1 steer, 1 heefer and 1 calf, 17 hogs, and various farming and household items.

"Agreeable to an order of Culpeper Court dated 16th October 1826 to us directed we have appraised the estate of Peter Lawrence dec'd as per list above amounting to two thousand and four hundred and fifty nine dollars and eighty four cents as witness our hands this 8th day of November 1826"
