Joseph was baptized February 4, 1846 at Katholisch, Calle Meschede, Westfalen, Preussen. He came to the United States from Prussia on the ship Hermann which departed from Bremen. He arrived in New York on November 16, 1868 at the age of 17. He was naturalized on October 19, 1880. By 1890 he was listed in the St. Louis Directory as having a grocery business with his brother-in-law Frank Overberg located at 3201 Meramec in St. Louis. Joseph was blind in the latter part of his life. The 1910 Mo census lists him as blind. Albert (Leo's dad) read to him every day. He died of a cerebral hemorrage.
