HUSBAND OF MOLLIE VINSON
MARCH 21, 1847
APRIL 9, 1899
MY OWN DEAR HUSBAND HAS
GONE TO NATIONS ABOVE YONDER SKY
TO GAZE ON THE BEAUTIFUL THRONE OF
HIM WHO IS SEATED ON HIGH.

Dear Ancestor
Your tombstone stands among the rest;
Neglected and alone.
The name and date are chiseled out
On polished, marbled stone.
It reaches out to all who care
It is too late to mourn.
You did not know that I exist
You died and I was born.
Yet each of us are cells of you
In flesh, in blood, in bone.
Our blood contracts and beats a pulse
Entirely not our own.
Dear Ancestor, the place you filled
One hundred years ago
Spreads out among the ones you left
Who would have loved you so.
I wonder if you lived and loved,
I wonder if you knew
That someday I would find this spot,
And come to visit you.

Note 4
While at the Nation Archives in Ft Worth TX, I discovered research books
(The Roster of Confederate Soldiers 1861-1865) on all the Members of the
Confederate Southern Army (CSA), It (Volume xv) listed Marion Vinson as
a Member of the Louisiana 5th Cavalry, Company C. Further research on this
information revealed a book title" Records of Louisiana Confederate Soldiers
and Louisiana Confederate Commands" (written by Andrew B. Booth) .
It had the following information listed for Marion Vinson:
Private, Company C, 5th Louisiana Cavalry, Roll of Prisoners of war,
of divers companies and regiments unattached CSA. Paroled Monroe
Louisiana, June 7, 1865. RES Ouachita, Louisiana.

Note 5
Louisiana 5th Cavalry, Company C research reveled the following information:
(a) The following are verbatim extracts of the service records of Marion Vinson
as they appear in the Booth, Volume III, book 2 page 940:
"M. Vinson, Pvt, Company D, 13th Battalion, Louisiana Partisan Rangers.
Roll Call for 1 Jan to 30 April 1863, only roll on file, enlisted 11 April 1863,
Lane's Ferry. Remarks : Present."
The 13th Battalion, Louisiana Partisan Rangers subsequently became part
of the 5th Louisiana Cavalry Regiment. Lane's Ferry was located on Bayou
Macon in what was then Carroll Parish. Bayou Macon now divides East and
West Carroll Parishes.

(b) Company C, McKoin Rangers (Morehouse) commander was John Mckoin.
They were attached to the 5th Regiment which was organized February 20,
1864 by the addition of four companies to the 13th Louisiana Cavalry Battalion.
The regiment became part of Colonel Isaac F. Harrison's cavalry brigade
in the Sub-district of North Louisiana. Most of the early service consisted of
scouting and picket duty between the Ouachita and Mississippi rivers.
They participated in a raid into Pineville on April 24, 1864.
On May 1, the regiment fought in a skirmish at HADNOT'S PLANTATION.
In September of the same year, after they had moved back to Northeast Louisiana,
they went with Harrison's Brigade into southern Arkansas but apparently saw no
fighting. By the end of the year they had returned to Louisiana.
Then in April of 1865 the entire Regiment moved to Alexandria Louisiana.
In May of 1865 the regiment surrendered near Mansfield Louisiana.
The above information was extracted from the book Titled
"Guide to Louisiana Confederate Military Units."
All of the above referenced books were obtained from the Ft Worth TX ,
Public Library in September of 1997.

A PRAYER FOR GENEALOGISTS
Lord, help me dig into the past
And sift the sands of time
That I might find the roots that made
This family of mine.
Lord, help me trace the ancient roads
On which my fathers trod,
Which led them through so many lands
To find our present sod.
Lord, help me find an ancient book
Or dusty manuscript,
Thatıs safely hidden now away
In some forgotten crypt.
Lord, let it bridge the gap that haunts
My soul when I canıt find,
The missing link between some name
That ends the same as mine.

Note 6
During this research of Brooks, I sent an e-mail out requesting info
on him. The following is the response I received from Wanda Vinson
Taylor, daughter of Ranney Alton Vinson, about Brooks:
The story is he never married. He lived with my grandparents (Mack Marion Vinson)
for a long time. She washed and ironed his big old suits my daddy told me.
This was while my dad was growing up. I was very close to him and his brothers when
I was very young until we moved to Texas. I do not know why he never married.
I don't know where he lived after he moved out. I have copied you his obituary From an
old newspaper clipping. Will get it in the mail soon. The Dr. Sewell Mentioned had his
office in his home across the street from us. I was best friends with his daughter Ann.
She had brothers. Grandpa's brothers gathered on their front porch and played dominoes
on Sunday afternoons. In Robstown, Garland Starnes And his mother Mollie lived in the
apartment above us. Garland and my Dad were Very close. Closer than his brothers until
he got older and seemed in ill health when He moved to (I think) Jonesboro. One of Garland's
sister's, and her husband lived And worked in (I think) South America back in those day for
many years. I forget which one she was. May have been Etta. They did not have children
as I remember. Oh yes, Garland never married until later years and he married unknown
Taylor (no kin to me), but that marriage didn't last long. She had a Grown son. I will write
more tomorrow as I remember things.
Wanda
