Notes for T
HEODORE PICHLER II:
Theodore II made his living making and assembling mouth organs for the Hohner Co. His son, Ludwig, tuned most of the reeds; each boy did his part. This work was done in the small village of Mauerbach and then taken to Mr. Hohner in Vienna, walking the 7 kilometers (about 6 miles) with more supplies. They were paid 3 cents a piece. These mouth organs were signed "Pichler". There seems to be none left in the family.

Theodore and Eleanore had 12 children. Their home in Mauerbach was a 7-acre farm, which was worked by hand ( no horse). The children delivered milk on their way to school to an old monastery which had a moat and draw bridge. If they arrived before 6:30 a.m., they were given a piece of cake by the Nuns; otherwise not. One son, Leo, walked about 9 kilometers on alternate days to deliver about 50lbs. of tobacco and cigarettes for "Mrs. Enders" to resell. The other boys who were supposed to be working on mouth organs, first had their shoes taken away by their mother, and finally she put them in dresses to keep them from going down to the skating pond with their friends.

In summer, they were sent to the river for mountain trout, reaching in an underwater cave, and bringing the fish out by hand until they had enough for a meal for the large family.

Theodore had purchased the farm from his sister Leopoldina, who had married "a millionaire" named Herman Bauer, owner of the Ottakringer Brewery, after she had been a maid in the Bauer home. Herman and Theodore rode out to Mauerbach in a horse-drawn coach to look at the farm. A price of 8000 gouldas was agreed upon. The chauffeur then drove them to the Court House where they bought the farm. Four years and many improvements later, Theodore went to Vienna to pay up the full amount of the farm. Leopoldina said, "But Theodore, it's worth three times tha much now." An argument followed. Leopold called a butler who threw Theodore out of the home. On his way home to Mauerbach that day, Theodore sold his cows, then sold the rest of their belongings and a few weeks later came to America, with 3 of their sons: Alois, Ludwig and Carl. Eleanore followed later with five of their nine (living) children: Hermine, Leopold, Paul, Otto and Edward. They sailed on Otto's birthday, and arrived on Eleanore's birthday via the "Amerika" steamship.
