OBITUARY..published in THE LANCASTER NEWS April 25, 1906

MR THOMAS CAUTHEN, AN AGED CITIZEN, PASSES AWAY

Mr. Thomas Cauthen, an aged and highly esteemed citizen of Pleasant Hill township, died last Saturday. He was a brother of the late Hiram Cauthen of Lancaster and was about 75 years of age. He was twice married. He leaves several sons and daughters, among them Messrs Joseph, John and Alec Cauthen, Mrs. Murkinson Robinson, Mrs, John Robinson and Mrs. Mack Bailey.
Mr. Cauthen was a good man and enjoyed the confidence of all who knew him. His remains were buried Sunday at New Hope.

According to "The Cauthen family history" by Mariline Cauthen Westenhaver, the nickname 'Waxhaw" may have originated from a few places. "Waxhaw", during the Civil War, had a large plantation in the "Waxhaws" section of Lancaster County, S.C. Another source says he may have married a girl from the "Waxhaw" section and this may have been why he was called 'Waxhaw"
His grave is located in the Old section of the New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery about 7 miles due south of Lancaster, S.C. I have visited it several times and have a photograph of it in my books.
Looks like either vandals, Hurricane Hugo, mother nature of just father time has done a number on it.
The top left hand part of it is gone and another part of it (maybe the bottom) is lying face first on the ground. It shows a picture of a hand pointing towards heaven. Below the life dates are the words.
"Farewell dear father.." I will find the rest of the words later! Cecil Cauthen has a picture of "Waxhaw" and I may borrow it and scan it soon!
