The Vis' came originally from the Veluwe in Gelderland. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Jan (Gerrits) Vis emigrated with his family (except son Lammert) on August 8, 1866 from the Netherlands to the USA. They settled in Allegan Co, MI, USA. Willem (Gerrits) Vis did seasonal work, "Eikenschillen", in Friesland and had an accident. He stayed there and married Wytske (Tjammes) Jager and after she died Wympje (Pieters) Veen. Willem (Gerrits) Vis and Wytske (Tjammes) Jager were my great-great-grandparents. Hendrik (Gerrits) Vis died November 23, 1859 in Nunspeet, Gelderland. His wife Frederica Drost emigrated from the Netherlands on August 6,1871 with her sons, Gerrit and Jan (John). In the Spring of 1873 they settled in Missaukee Co, MI, USA. Her two daughters (Annetje and Gerritje), followed later as well. Evert (Gerrits) Vis emigrated (after his wife died) with his family in 1866 from the Netherlands and settled in Allegan Co, MI, USA. Jannes (Gerrits) Vis did seasonal work in Friesland as well. There are still quite a few Vis' in Epe, Ermelo and Nunspeet, Gld. I wish to thank Gerard Berends, Clinton Buning, Sierd and Henny Eizenga, Harriet Kennon and Mr. Hendrik Wiegers for the information they gave me regarding the Vis family. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Knobbe's came originally from Zandbelt (a little place close to Giethoorn and Wanneperveen), Overijssel. A number of them were working originally in the peatmoss (turf), which was used in those days for heating their houses. I wish to thank Mr. Wiecher Ponne for the information which he made readily available on his website (see the related link on the bottom of the page "Genealogie Ponne.") regarding the Knobbe family. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ While working on the genealogy, I was constantly reminded of Psalm 103:15,16 and 17: "As for man, his days are like grass, he flourishes like a flower of the field; the wind blows over it and it is gone, and it's place remembers it no more. But from everlasting to everlasting the Lord's love is with those that fear him, and his righteousness with their children's children". |
