Notes for WILLIAM CHIDESTER: He was known as Whistling Dick. He died from smallpox contacted while delivering produce to Albany, NY., in his 55th year. On 28 June 1798,Samuel, Daniel and William mortgaged 121 acres in Suffrage, NY. (Suffrage was Milford in 1800). In the census of NY in1820, he was said to have a daughter born 1800-1810 and a son born 1810-1820. (LCS - Letter 5 Feb. 1990); William Chidester seems to have married a Rebecca someone but as far as I know had no children. |

Notes for SAMUEL CHIDESTER: 1798, October 17, Samuel, Daniel and William mortgaged 121 acres in Suffrage, NY. Suffrage was Milford in 1800. 1800, October 1, he mortgaged 117 acres in Milford, Otsego Co, NY, it was discharged in 1810. Mortgage Book B, page 121. 1817, January 15, Unadilla, Otsego Co, NY, He and his wife Sarah (Sally) sold 108 acres. Mortgage Book W, page 77. 1820 - He may have died or deserted the family as Sally is enumerated with some of her children only, however it is possible and very probable he migrated to OH where most of the Chidesters he was related to went. Sally, his wife, was only 45 years of age when she died and he was only 45 years of age at that time also. He could be the Samuel in Huron Co, OH or the Samuel in Pickaway Co, OH, as no family has been established for them. |

Notes for DANIEL CHIDESTER: 1798, June 28, - Samuel , Daniel and William mortgaged 121 acres in Suffrage, NY. Suffrage was Milford in 1800. Daniel Chidester did have two wives. This Phebe, who married Alexander Walling, was daughter of Susannah ------, (last name unknown, but who died 3 October 1818, age 31), & was also a sister of John T. Chidester ( who drove the stage coach & for whom the town of Chidester was named). The father, Daniel married a second time to Nancy Thomas and had another large family by her. (LCS - letter 5 Feb. 1990). |

Notes for AARON CHIDESTER: In the census 1830, he was listed as having 2 sons born between 1820 -1825. In Portlandville, NY in 1830 he was given the contract for building the Boarding House; He commenced the job, dug the cellar and did some other work and mysteriously disappeard, and was never heard from again. His wife Sally Chidester remained in Portlandville until her death. In 1840 before her death she sold the plot where the boarding house was to be constructed. "Early History of the Town of Milford" by Ezra Stevens. pg 24. In 1870 census - age 70, identified as "Hermit". (LCS - Letter 5 Feb. 1990). She has no children identified for him but he probably had 3 males & 1 female. |

He and Esther, his wife, on the 13th April 1819, in Milford, OtsegoCo, NY, sold 3 acres (Book 90 p. 105) 1830; He is listed in the census of 1830 as having 3 sons born 1820 - 1830, 1 daughter born 1825 - 1830. 1848; He and Esther, sold another parcel on 6 January 1848, Milford, Otsego Co, NY. 1849; He sold his Baker Farm to William A. Bunn, in Milford, Otsego Co, NY, on which he had been residing, in 1849, and joined the Mormons in Nauvoo, Hancock Co, IL with his son Daniel. "Early History of the Town of Milford" by Ezra Stevens pg 12. This is an unpublished manuscript. 1850; He and Esther are listed on the WI census in Walworth Co. 1860; He and Esther are listed on the WI census in Dunkirk, Dane Co. and living with David and his wife, Ruth Celina Reed. From LCS; I have David Chidester & Ruth Celins Reed as son of Moses Chidester. His father and two brothers joined the Mormon Church but followed the James Jesse Strang faction when they split off after the death of Joseph Smith. (Letter, 5 February 1990). He and Esther may have died at Nauvoo, Hancock Co, IL, as stated in the above "Early History of the Town of Milford", but it seems more probable they died in Dane Co, WI. |
