Notes for D
John Damon is believed to have come to America on the ship "Elizabeth and Ann" in 1635, appearing first in Dedham and later settling in Reading, Ma. where he was registered freeman in May 1645. John was received into fellowship of the church in Dedham on January of 1645. John Damon is thought to have been an inhabitant of the town of Reading at about the year of incorporation in 1644. Reading was set off from the town of Lynn and was first known as Lynn Village. In 1640 the Court ordered "that Lynn Village should be exempted from the taxes as soon as seven houses should be built and seven families having been settled". In 1644 enough houses having been built and enough families having been settled, the Court further ordered "that Lynn Village should take the name of Reading".
John settled on the Common, where the Quannapewitt House stood. His wife Abigail was included in the list of the members of the church in Reading from 1648 to 1650. In 1652 John was listed as having drawn a lot of ten acres in Reading. In 1658 or 1659 he received an additional 43 acres and eleven perches. The year 1666 showed that he also received lands in the division of the "Great Swamp". A record of the year 1667 reveals that John Damon owned one of the 59 houses in the town of Reading. He was appointed Lieutenent of the Reading Company of militia in 1676, in which position he served until 1684. His name appears beside that of Thomas Damon in a list of men assessed to raise money for the purchase of the territory of Reading from the Indians. He was a Deacon in the church.
