Michael2 Allerding (Peter1 Allarding)1 was born March 15, 1793 in France, and died February 16, 1859 in Hancock Co., Ohio1. He married Yosandia Hyacinth Anthony Abt. 1818 in Belgium. She was born March 15, 1797 in Paris, France1, and died March 26, 1877 in Ohio. Notes for Michael Allerding: Michael Allerding married Yosandia Anthony who was of Royal birth. Michael was her father's Hostler. Because of she being of a Royal family of France and married beneath her station her parents disinherited her. When she came to America she knew nothing of work and suffered great hardship. They were married in France but located later in Belgium. Children born to this union were: John Michael born 1819, died 1895; Nicholas born 1821, died 1887 (Author's Grandfather), Margaret born Jan 8, 1824, died Feb. 8, 1898; Elizabeth born August 1, 1829 died Oct 22, 1887, married a man named Eggerman. The above four children were born in Belgium but the last five were born in Ohio. Those five Allerding children born in Ohio were: Mathias, John, Josiah, Anthony, Peter. Michael and Yosandia Allerding came to America in 1831. They were six weeks on the ocean. One daughter waa born at sea and buried at sea. They landed at Buffalo, N.Y. by the way of the Hudson River and canal. They settled in Stark County, Ohio near Massillion. He was a blacksmith and a farmer. In 1835 they moved to Ashland County south of Loudenville and in 1854 moved to Hancock County. Michael was first in the ranks of Napoleon wben he marched on Prussia. He fought in the battle of Waterloo on June 18, 1815. He died in 1859 in Hancock County Ohio, and was buried in Hassen Cemetery in Van Burn Township. Yossanda died eighteen years later. In the military campaign early in his life, the army was driven into the Baltic Sea where they were held for 24 hours. Exposure at this time may have partly been the cause to his short life. (complied by Catherine Allerding Martin. May 1, 1947) Notes: Michael was a blacksmith and no doubt he did farming also. Michael and Yosanna came to America in 1831 with their family of four children at the time. A baby girl was born while on their way over here. Unfortunately this girl died and was buried at sea. They landed in Buffalo NY by way of the Hudson River and Canal. They settled in Stark Co, near Massinllen, Ohio. In 1835 they moved to Ashland Co. then in 1854 to Hancock Co., Orange Twp. Michael was apparently in the ranks when Napolean marched into Prussia and fought in the Battle of Waterloo on June 18, 1815. Yosanna was of the royal family of France Census: 1840 Hanover, Ashland Co., OH-listed as Michael Alleding Census: 1850 Orange Twp. , Hancock Co., OH--listed as Michael Aldreding, p. 492[allerding.ftw] Michael Allerding married Yosandia Anthony who was of Royal birth. I have been in contact with a fellow, and he sent me his family tree, and he is also an Allerding descendant. He had a lot of the same info as you, but he also had Michael Allerding's (1793-1859) siblings. He has them as: Peter, Nicholas (1798-1854), Louis (1797-1878), John Nicholas, Ann Catherine (m. Theodore Swindle), and Mary Catherine (m. to Mathias Swindle). He also has Michael's wife as Yosanna (Eusanda) Anthony, but he also says that she may have changed her name from Jessant Prèveré. He sent me a copy of our Nicholas' will, which was pretty interesting, as it actually mentions Emanuel and Solomon in the will. The Undersigned Citizens of Marshall County Ind. and neighbors and acquaintances of John Frevert late of Co ?C? 1st Reg. Ohio Vols in War with Mexico: as we have been informed, would represent that said John Frevert from Rheumatism and other diseases is now in a helpless condition unable to perform any physical labor, and from present appearances does not seem probable that he will ever recover therefrom. He has been laid up since September last 1884 requiring constant attention and assistance. We believe that if he is entitled to receive a pension at all that now is the time, he much stands in need thereof. We therefore join in a request that his case be taken up and considered specially. This time it is the person of Emmanuel Allerding one of our most highly respected citizens. Emmanuel was born in Lowdenville, OH, on June 22, 1846 and departed this life in Brandon, May 27, 1932, at the age of 85 yrs, 11 months and 5 days. He was married to Sarah Jane Wilford August 31, 1868, at Vinton, who passed away Dec. 9, 1922. To this union eight children were born all of whom are living except Jennie, who died at the age of 16 years. He was obedient unto the gospel and joined the Christian church in 1898 and continued faithful unto his relationship with Christ. Only last Lord's Day he assisted in the communion and at the close of the services pronounced benediction. He had been an elder in the church for about 25 yrs and at our annual election last January, due to his infirmities of old age he was elected honorary elder. He loved the Church of Christ and all of its auxiliaries and attended the services whenever possible. On Friday morning he was in usual health, when in the post office about 8:30 o'clock, he apparently, without a struggle, passed on to enjoy the realities of the Great Unknown. He leaves to mourn his loss, two half-brothers, and two half-sisters living in Michigan and the following children: Cora Allerding, Hastings, Mich; Mary Naylor, Mable Zimmer, Garrison; Myrtle Good, Cedar Rapids; Jacob Allerding, Manda Naylor, and Carrie Likens, of this community; 21 grandchildren; 34 great grand-children; and 4 great great grandchildren, besides a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Sunday morning at ten o'clock at the home of the daughter, Mrs. Likens and at 10:30 from the First Christian Church. The services were conducted by Rev. Loren T. Jenks, pastor of the church with burial in the Brandon Cemetery beside his wife and daughter. The beautiful floral offerings showed the esteem in which he was held. Allerding, a resident of the Brandon community for the past forty years, passed away Saturday morning at nine o'clock at the family home in Brandon. Mrs. Allerding had been in failing health for about nine years, and suffered a stroke of paralysis recently. She had been bedfast for some little time. Funeral services were held at the afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, conducted at the Christian Church in Brandon Sunday by Rev. John McKee, and interment was in the Brandon Cemetery. Mrs. Allerding was 72 years of age, and is survived by her husband and seven children. The children are Mrs. Cora Allerding, of Hastings, Mich.; Jake Allerding; Mrs. Amanda Naylor, and Mrs. Carrie Likens, of Brandon; Mrs. Mary Naylor and Mrs. Harry Zimmer, of Garrison, and Mrs. Noah Good, of Cedar Rapids. Mrs. Allerding was a most estimable woman, and being a pioneer of the Brandon community, leaves many old friends who mourn her passing and whose sympathies are extended to the bereaved family. Bulletin Journal 27 Feb. 1896 Brandon--We have just heard of the death of Miss Jennie Allerding, who lived northeast of town. The particulars will be given in the next week's letter. Bulletin Journal 5 March 1896 Brandon--How uncertain this life of ours is. But a few days ago the subject of this sketch was enjoying all the social privileges of life, in the bloom of health and vigor and consequently, when on Sunday afternoon, Feb. 23, the death of Jennie Allerding was made known to the public, the news seemed almost incredible to all. The deceased was born in Carlisle Grove, Benton Co. on June 4, 1880,and age of 15 years, 8 months, and 19 days. She moved to this county with her parents about 5 years ago. Jennie possessed that amiableness so characterized her disposition, and hence was a a friend to all because she showed herself friendly. The vacancy caused by her death in the community would indeed be hard to fill. We know her, yes, to respect her, for she had been one of our pupils in school, and not one word or act, to my knowledge, unbecoming to a lady was ever noted. Death is at all times an unwelcome guest, but when it takes from our midst a person whose life and pathway is sunshine, it is indeed harder to bear. The deceased leaves upon the shores of time a father, mother, one brother, and six sisters to mourn their great loss. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. W. H. Lusted, assisted by Revs. Wheat and Overbaugh. The sermon from beginning to end was very touching and full of sympathy to the attentive audience. To the bereaved ones, we extend our heartfelt sympathy. More About Jennie Rachel Allerding: Burial: Brandon Cemetery, Buchanon Co., Iowa 183 vi. Myrtle Allerding25, born May 30, 188625; died 193625. More About Margaret Ellen Allerding: Burial: Lakeview Cemetery, Nashville, Michigan Fact 1: See Note Page25 Notes for Fred Smith: [allerding.ftw] Fred and Margaret Smith were the parents of Edith (Smith) Miller. He was born in Paris Twp of Kent County on April 4, 1866 after his fathers return from duty during the Civil War. Margaret was the daughter of Nicholas Allerding and Lydia Baum and was born on Feb. 4th 1872 in Carlton Twp of Barry Co. Their marriage license records that on Dec 9, 1888, Fred Smith 22, and Maggie Allerding, 17, were married by J.G. Winey of the Brethren Church in Campbell, Ionia Co. They lived the first few years of their married life in Carlton Twp moving to Irving Twp shortly before their first child, Dayton, was born on the 24th of Nov 1890. A girl, Stella was born on May 21st 1893. Following that they moved to Maple Grove Twp, where Edith was born Dec 9, 1902 and finally a boy Earl A. on the 9th of Nov 1909. They always kept food farm stock and had well kept farms. The family was a close one and they thoroughly enjoyed their four children, so they were shocked and saddened when their 14 year old, previously healthy daughter, Stella, was suddenly taken ill with appendicitis, which had ruptured. She died soon after on October 15, 1907. They always treasured a picture of her taken with her Sunday School Class just before she was stricken. In the spring of 1918 their oldest son, Dayton, entered service in W WI serving in France in the St. Mihial and Argonne Offensives. He was discharged and returned in 1919. He was married three times - to Virgie Ayres in 1912, to Estelle Starks in 1914 and finally to May Polley. He died on July 6, 1973 Edith married Clifton Miller and her brother, Earl, married Quma Miller, a Daughter of John and Eltie (Cheeseman) Miller and therefore, a cousin of children. Another tragedy befell the family when on Jan 5, 1937 Fred died en route to Pennock Hospital. He had been found by his neighbor Clarence Shaw at about 3pm. that day unconscious and trampled in an occupied horse stall in his barn. It was thought that he had fallen with a heart Attack and was trampled by the excited horse. Margaret then lived alone in Nashville until on Dec 30, 1943 she was married Samuel Ostroth, a retired minister. He died in 1948. It was from his estate that Ken bought a 1924, black Wipit Car. Margaret was almost 87 when she died the 2nd. day of January 1959. A short time before her death she had to have a leg removed because of gangrene. She always took great pleasure in all of her grand-children and great grandchildren. Fred and Margaret are buried in the Lakeview Cemetery. Comment from David Miller: Edith was a wonderful Grandmother; the most non-judgmental sort. Her cooking and homemaking skills were the measure of her care for her family and anyone and everyone welcomed into her home. Early-on I developed a craving for her Banana Bread which I asked for as her "Brown Bread." I think grandma was flattered by this as she always made brown bread when I came to stay and she never corrected me when I referred to it as such. Grandma spent several years at Thornapple Manor. She missed her homemaking role terribly. I believe she thought of the Manor in an archaic way as "the poor house," but she complied, to such an extent that she was loved by all the staff assigned to her care. In Nov. of 1997 Grandma told me that she often daydreamed of times gone by. She said grandpa and her all her grandchildren were often in these dreams, and it was so real. She admitted that she suspected her medications as the source of these daydreams, but she derived such pleasure and solice from them that she didn't care what caused them. When others were struck with bad fortune or an untimely death grandma would say: why couldn't it have been me rather than them ? She was the best grandma imaginable. Writer Lives in Dallas. Pearl Catherine6 Allerding (Jacob Pifer5, Emanuel E.4, Nicholas3, Michael2, Peter1 Allarding) was born March 24, 1893 in Brandon, Buchanon Co., Iowa, and died 1966. She married Ray Postel. He was born June 21, 1888, and died April 02, 1956. Notes for Ray Postel: History of Epworth p. 53 "The following people have served Epworth as painters since 1920: Ray Postel, Barney Hall and sons, Ed Desmond, Truman Bradley, Bill Driscoll & his sons, Richard and Robert, and Walter Boge and his son Gene" History of Epworth pgs 10-14 LEGEND OF A SHOOTING SPREE "Stories, such as this, were recorded in newsprint during the heyday of Charley Barnett, an affable Farley scribe--even though it was Epworth people involved. You may take this with a grain of Morton's if you wish, but remember, it is said, "Truth is stranger than fiction." (I don't know who said that first, but I think it was some fisherman.) The out-of-towner "Hucksley Haines" is a couple of memorable characters wrapped into one, and he has been given a fictious name to keep posterity from calling "Sound Off" programs. Other names are for real. Hank George's Ford Garage currently houses the Epworth Building & Supply Co. The proprietors: Paul Kremer, Al Main, and Bill McDermott, have renovated the building.... One summer day, about 1927, Hucksley Haines blew into Epworth, banjo and all. Even though he was not old enough to vote for anybody before President Coolidge, Hucksley knew everything--all one had to do was ask him. He was everything but humble! Huck was taller than a washline post, and wide as a Chicago Bear. And talk?!! He could talk faster than Lahey's dogs when they tree a coon. Within a week he knew everybody from Albrect to Zalaznick, and shook hands with everyone--two or three times a day. Hucksley worked for the Illinois Central, and rented a room in Allen's Boarding House, but he hung around Hank George's Ford Garage most of the day. The entertainment life revolved around this garage bunch. Hank George was the boss; Cy Millenkamp was the bookmaker; Emmett Grimes and Leo Steckel were the auto physicians; "Key--ripes Ed" Hogan and Charley Hogan (no relations) were the car peddlers; while Pete George and Ross McNeill took care of hungry gas tanks and airless tires. George Noble and Joe Kehoe also put in some time. Hucksley immediately endeared himself to this gang by introducing a new joy...He drove a long nail through the wooden bench, which sat in front of the garage and served as the town park. He wired the bottom of the nail, and ran the wire into the garage where it could be touched to a hot-shot battery. Along came Ray Postel, the town's interior-exterior decorator, and Hucksley enticed him to sit on the bench beside him--only Ray sat on the nail! "I understand you're working in Mrs. Keyes' house," Huck said, giving Cy, in back of the window, the signal to "loose the juice." "Yah," Ray said. "I've finished painting and now I'm hanging the wa--HALL PAPER!" Ray shouted the last, shooting to his feet as he was shot with a surge of electricity. Hucksley laughed until his appendix pained. So, this proved to be the current hit until nearly every man in town fell victim to Huck's contribution to hilarity. Huck seemed a world--beater at everything...He out-pegged Art Edwards at cribbage; got the jump on Herman Ruh at checkers; and was a ringer at horseshoes--even better than Bob Story. some people said Huck was more musical than Pete George, Charley Scott, and Don, Chet, and Truman Bradley, all combined. (Which was like saying somebody knows more music than Phil Schmitz and his All American, Western Dubuque Band!) Huck was a hero for awhile but he got into the wrong lineup when he started to make a play for the ladies. Feminine pulchritude had long been synonymous with Epworth. The local lads took the gals out on dates, two or three times a month: to band concerts, box socials, or whatever. The guys were always respectful but the ladies said that Hucksley added a new dimension. He talked candy and flowers, and was superior with the superlatives. Backed by this great line, he also threw a few passes. The Epworth boys heard the signals and weren't about to let this outsider quarterback for them. He was getting into the wrong backfield. Hucksley, in turn, bared a caustic sense of humor, and began ridiculing the guys behind their backs. This went over like a bleeding blimp, and Huck was about as popular as a nicked razor blade. One day, about corn picking time, somebody dropped Hucksley a hint that it might be a good idea to leave the ladies alone, or leave town, because some of the boys were observed getting out their shotguns. Hucksley was startled at first, but after snooping around, he found it wasn't a gang plot--just that the fellows were getting ready for the pheasant season. Once in awhile Hucksley took a ride on the train--"for inspections." Some of the Epworth men began to complain to Hank George, and said they hoped Hucksley would forget to come back from one of his trips. Hank didn't take much of a shine to Hucksley either because he bothered the help. It proved surprising when Hank invited the young upstart to go along on a pheasant hunting trip. Charley Hogan and Joe Kehoe were also invited. There was no open season for pheasants in Dubuque County, so Hank suggested going to New Hampton as he had heard the sky was clouded with birds up there. They started early in the morning, and except for a tire stepping on a nail at Earlville, they arrived without incident on a country road west of New Hampton. They found a barn bordering the road, hemmed in on two sides by corn fields, with pheasants taking off and landing like it was an air field. Joe Kehoe and Hank volunteered to walk to the farm house to obtain permission to hunt. Charley and Hucksley had the shooting irons out by the time the "permission-seekers" returned with authority to hunt, "if they were careful." A mare was the sole occupant of an adjoining barn yard. She was very old but had good care, as her cropped mane and tail indicated. She came to the fence, within a few feet of these strangers and gave them a quizzical eye. Hank fooled with his gun. "Guess I'll check the sights," he declared, and leaning on the fence, he pointed at a post and said, "Bam!" Hucksley gave a sneering snicker. Next, Hank pointed at the mare and again said, "Bam!" This time the gun said, "BOOM!" The mare genuflected to her knees as if she were shot. The next few seconds made this explicit as she rolled over and was the latest fatality of Chickasaw County. Hank looked at his gun and said softly, "It went off." "Yah, it went off, " Hucksley mimicked, but his laugh reflected nervousness. "Do you think we'd better scram?" Joe Kehoe suggested. "Maybe it would be a good idea to get outa' here, " Hank added, looking at Hucksley. "By all means!" Huck stated decisively, and he broke for the car with a speed comparable to that of a fast track at the Drake Relays. They piles in and drove off in all directions. Before the quartette reached Epworth, they had reached an oral agreement about secrecy... Most boarders of Epworth ate at the "Miehe Sisters," a fine, home-cooking establishment, catering to regular customers, banquets, and tourists. They also were the roots of the local grapevine. Somehow, the New Hampton incident leaked into the communications system and tornadoed around town. Hank George and Charley Hogan left suddenly for Detroit on business. Someone asked Joe Kehoe if anything happened on the hunting trip. "Yes, we had car trouble in Earlville, " Joe said with a poker face, and quickly changed the subject. Hucksley dropped a hint here and there, while dropping an eyelash. "I'm not saying anything, " He grinned, in answer to questions. "I didn't see any horses fly over." This went on for several days, and with all the evasive answers, there was static on the grapevine. John Whitsell tried to calm down the scandalmongers. "I can't believe our boys would run away from trouble, " he said. "If Mr. Haines will spread rumors behind someone else's back, he'll talk about you behind your back too." The kids began playing "hunter and horse", and schoolteachers Miss Burrell, Miss Jackson, and Miss Severn had extra lessons about the evils of prevarication, and running away from trouble. The unraveled puzzle--Joe Kehoe was quiet about it, but Hucksley acted as if he didn't want the story to wither on the vine. He fertilized it with remarks like: "Anybody want to go horsepheasant hunting?" Hank and Charley returned and began hearing the rumors. They smiled and asked what Hucksley had to say. Joe Kehoe looked as friendly as the wag of a dog's tail. Hucksley, in turn, was perplexed by their attitude, and left town for a day. John Price, the depot agent, said he went west..."Probably pheasant hunting in New Hampton". Hucksley returned to Epworth the next day --and then promptly disappeared. After a few days the Marshall broke into his room but Hucksley was gone--banjo and all. It was then that Hank George handed a letter to the Miehe sisters to put on their bulletin board. It read as follows: New Hampton, IA Nov. 14th. Dear Hank, It was nice to see you and Joe Kehoe again, while you were on your hunting trip last week. You left so quickly I didn't have a chance to thank you. I was so pleased that you agreed to shoot our old mare for us. She was suffering but I didn't have the heart to dispose of her myself. Thanks again for doing this for me. Give my regards to Clara, John and the rest of my relatives around Epworth.
