FINNEY in this city, Wednesday, May 15, T. J. BARTON, aged 80 years and 8 months. The deceased was the father of Mrs. M. H. FINNEY and with his wife has been making his home with his daughter and son-in-law for the past three years. He had been in poor health for some time past and during the last few weeks had failed rapidly necessitating the call of another daughter, Mrs. NOURSE, to his bedside, to assist in caring for him. A son has also arrived to be present at the funeral which will take place from the house tomorrow afternoon at 2:30. Mr. BARTON was born in Clark County, Ohio, in 1814, his father being one of the earliest settlers in what was then a far west and uncivilized country. For over seventy years Mr. BARTON was a resident of Clark county, a prominent man in business and political circles. He witnessed the settling and upgrowth of his native state through all the trying years of early inhabitancy and through the disorders and troubles, internal and national, that have occurred during the past half century and has seen it become almost the immediate center of the population of our great country instead of the very western edge of civilization such as it was in his early youth. He was married in 1886 to Sarah BIDDLE and the union was blessed by the birth of thirteen children, twelve of whom remain to mourn the death of the aged father. Letter from Thomas Junkin Barton of Pleasant Hills, Ohio to his daughter, Mary Frances Galloway Barton (Mrs. Eulass Law Walton) in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Transcribed 3/17/97 from the original hand-written letter in possession of Susan Ann Pope, his great, great grandaughter: Tuesday Night Pleasant Hills June the 7th A.D. 1864 Dear Children After so long a delay I have concluded while some youngsters are in the next room giving vent to their musical facultys that I would put in a little time in pening a few lines to you altho I do not expect to finish it to night for I am verry tiart and worn down for my lot is almost as hard as that of Jonah or Lazarus. We are all well in boddy & lim except Emma. She met with a sore accident on last Saturday week. Her & Maggy was riding behind Charley on the grey horse & he scared & threw them off & broke Emma's arm about 2 inches above the wrist joint. It was a bad brake. It was broke square off till the hand fell back toward the elbow. I set & doctored it myself without aid or council. She is getting along fine. She can begin to move her fingers which makes her feel verry proud. The general health is good except the measles & mumps are raging throughout the county wherever they can get a holt. I believe they have been in every family in this nighborhood except mine. I had a letter from James about ten days ago. The regiment he is in was at Charleston Virginia but since that time it has been ordered on to Richmond. I had a letter from John night before last. The regiment he is in was then at New River gap Virginia and was on the forward move. He complained that his feet was verry sore marching. He is in the 154 Ohio NG. James is in the 8th Ohio Cavelry. I also had a letter from Will Pottel. He is at Camp Paw Paw Virginia. He is in the 153 Regiment NG. Poor fellows they will see trouble. The second draft went off in this township last week. There was 6 to draft and it took 5 black abolitionists and one Democrat and the Democrat is over age so they don't get any Democrat this load of poles. There was a nasty murder commit in Springfield last Saturday night. Two men broke into auld Jim Lowery's grocery and at a late hour and fell onto him with blugeons and beet out his brains. They have been arested & commit to jail but one of them stabed one of the police who arested them and it is thought he will not live. Tell Fanny that auld Billy Johnston was married last Thursday also that Salome has moved to Columbus. I am told that Sam has got back to Columbus and that he is verry much disfigured on account of his eye being out. Now that the family are all in bed fast asleep and I begin to feel drowsey I will close for tonight. So good night for the present but I will say before I retire that it is dark clowds and cold and I feer it will freeze. Wednesday Night. All well I am going wright a few more line. I have been planting potatoes all day faithful. It has been verry warm to day & it is raining some tonight. There is but a poor prospect for corn hear this season. A great many have planted their corn twise and yet have a par set. I am going to begin to replant to morrow provided I am alive and it don't rain. We will have a most abundant crop of apples if nothing happens them. There will be plenty of rasberrys but few blackberrys. I herd to day from the regiment that John is in it has been attacted by a Rebel force and has been driven back about 25 miles. William wishes to know if there is a good sight in the paining. If there is he will come out. He has lift Lagond from the fact that the Establishment is almost closed for the want of hands and almost all the hands they have are Nigger and the white men belonged to the State gards and have been taken to the seat of war, harvest hands will be out of the question. Harvest in this section will be verry heavy. I have forty acres to cut and about one half of it is uncomon heavy & I have no help except Charley & Ben unless will help me some. O hes if there is no sight for Will in the painting he would work at the trunk business if there is any Establishment in Kalamazoo. He worked at it all last winter in Dayton and he can make a good trunk. I would like to get him out of this hell hole when they are drafting almost every week. You must not fail to write because I don't answer your letters immediately. I have to answer letters from John, James, Will Pottle and others and I have no time except at night and about that time I am tiart & worn down. I am still determined to be out to see you this fall if nothing serious myself or family or you should come in. Tell Fanny that Will Routsong is dead. He was in the late battles on the Rappahannock under Grant. Will was meary lib Shellabargers intended. James crop is killed. It is a devel of pitty it had not been auld Daivy insted of James. Sam Best is wounded but whether he has died or not from his wounds I do not know. You wished to know if I did not want the gun and I do not recollect whether I give you a answer or not but I will now. You need not consern yoruself about it for I have plenty of guns and do not use any except to ferighten crows and hawks. I believe I cannot think of any thing more of importance to night and as all the family are in bed and asleep I will bid you a good night. Thursday. You wished to know if I had ever got that rocking chair. Yes I got it certain. Thursday night. I have been reeding my paper which I received to night by the politeness of a neighbor and I see that the corps in Grants army on the Rappahammock is set down at 45.000 a great meany of the Clark and Green County soldiers was killed in those battles. It has been verry warm all day and thretning rain & I wish to goodness it would rain for it has been extremely drye for the last two weeks. Edwins youngest girl little Amy is not expected to live. She had the measles and from a lack of proper care as from bad treatment perhaps has relapsed into fever. Kate was there all night last night. I have not herd from her to day. I have now exausted all my store of information that would be any way interesting to you and I will therefore come to a close. The family send their love to you all. We are all well. During one such seizure, he fell unattended into a fire. The injuries that resulted from this seizure were the amputation of his right arm and two fingers and a thumb from his left arm. This occured between 1862 and 1871. Possible timeline: Hannah Johnson Barton dies in 1876 in Belle Plaine Kansas. In 1880, the family is in Monmouth, IL. Possibly Charlotte felt that it would be better to move to Kansas to be able to take care of her father, her husband and her 3 children. In 1889, her daughter marries Spencer Rogers in the home of Thomas and Charlotte Barton. It is believed that they lived in Topeka. In 1897, William Barton dies in Belle Plaine. In 1900, Spencer and Mary Blanche and Charlotte move to Idaho. 1901, Spencer dies there. Mary Blanche and her two children, Bernice and Gladys move back to Kansas. Sometime between 1902 and 1912, Charlotte a widow, her daughter, Mary Blanche, now a widow move to Oregon. Charlotte dies in Oregon in 1912, Bernice marries in 1914. Obituary of Thomas Galloway Barton in the 24 July 1891 edition of the Belle Plaines News: Thomas G. Barton of this city died very suddenly Sunday evening, July 19, at 6:30 o'clock. He was walking in his garden when he suddenly fell, face downward and died and in a few minutes was dead. Mr. Barton was born October 31, 1837 in Warren County, Illinois. He enlisted in Co. C, 36th Regt., Ill. Vol. Inf., and served gallantly as a soldier in defense of the stars and stripes. Immediately after the close of the war he was married to Miss Lottie G. Barton of Yellow Springs, Greene County, Ohio, September 28, 1865, and they took up their residence in Illinois. Mrs. Barton is the daughter of Wm. Barton, known as "Grandpa Barton" in this community. Though of the same name there was no blood relationship in the families. In 1885, Mr. and Mrs. Barton moved to Belle Plaine, where they have since resided. Some years ago, Mr. Barton was seriously injured while fighting a prairie fire, which threatened the destruction of much property and his home. From the effects of this brave and persistent battle with such a demon as fire, he had his left arm amputated, and suffered the loss of a portion of his right hand. He was also a sufferer from disease contracted in the army service. Mr. Barton was an exemplary man and a man of earnest convictions, and was beloved by all in this community, and his sincerity and honor never questioned. He was an industrious, energetic man, always interested in the welfare and prosperity of the people. He leaves a very interesting and highly respected family. His widow, Lottie A. Barton, for some years has been afflicted with blindness and has the sympathy of the entire community. The oldest child, Forrest, is a most estimable and worthy young man now in business in Moran, Kansas. The oldest daughter, known as Blanche, now Mrs. S. L. Rogers of near Topeka. The other daughter, Miss Florence, has been sometime in Nebraska, teaching school and is held in high esteem by our society people. Mr. Barton leaves three sisters and three brothers. One of them, J. P. Barton, of Guthrie, Ok., being now in the city. This community extends heartfelt sympathy to all in this sudden affliction. It is a lesson to all "that in the midst of life we are in death, " and this sundering of earthly ties add a link to the claim leading into the unknown and bids us heed the fact, we are but mortal. As the flowers fade and wither, as the stars shine and go out of sight, as friendships leave their kisses, and love gives tenderness to the heart and then leaves only memory as the plant which grief can call its own, so is the passing away of life. Remember, dear friends that all suffering and sickness have no place in the "Beautiful land," but all is joy and rapture and the glory of never ending day drives away all darkness forever. The funeral was postponed from 10:00 a.m Tuesday [July 21, 1891] until 6:00 p.m. on account of Miss Florence not being able to reach this city from Nebraska. Rev. J.F. Irwin officiated in the absence of Mr. Barton's pastor, Rev. W.W. Curtis of the Presbyterian church. Rev. Irwin preached an eloquent and touching sermon, selecting for his text, Rev. 14:13 - "And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth. Yea, saith the Spirit that they may rest from their labors and their works do follow them, "directing the bereaved ones to look to Christ for comfort, of whom the deceased was an earnest, fervent, and faithful follower at the time of his death. The funeral was largely attended and was conducted by the Grand Army Post of this city, of which Mr. B. was a member. A poem by Ara Viola Pirl entitled, "In Memory" was read: Our brother has departed his journey here is o'er He's gone to live a higher life, To dwell on earth no more. How sadly do we miss him, But God's will is devine, He gave, he took away again, In his own way and time. But, oh it is consoling To the many friends bereaved, To remember with patience, God's mandate he recieved, Uncomplainingly he suffered And, with meekness, bore the cross; A crown of life he's wearing now. Can we not bear our loss? O, would we then recall him, Even were it in our power. When untold bliss with angels bright Is here forever more. No, God who sent the sorrow, Can cure the wounded heart, On him we'll cast our burden, An he will heal the smart. Our circle has been sundered Twice, by Death's relentless hand, But, by God's grace we'll meet again, In an unbroken band. Farewell, brother Barton. We miss thy presence bright; Farewell, till united In the heavenly land of light. More About Thomas Galloway Barton: Burial: Jul 1891, Belle Plaine Cemetery, Belle Plaine, Sumner Co., Kansas Medical Information: Discharged due to "fits" of epilepsy which rendered him nearly unconscious. Marriage Notes for Charlotte Barton and Thomas Barton: Married by Maxwell P. Gaddis, a Methodist Episcopal minister. He was a circuit rider, who also preached at the Yellow Springs ME Church, but we do not have church records for them. Yellow Springs United Methodist Church is at 202 S. Winter St., Yellow Springs OH 45387. There was no cemetery at the church, and the only Bartons I found in the Miami Twp. cemetery book were in Glen Forest Cemetery in Yellow Springs. The marriage record does not say what church they were married in, just the minister's (or JP's) name. Possibly Charlotte felt that it would be better to move to Kansas to be able to take care of her father, her husband and her 3 children. Notes for Charlotte Ann Barton: Charlotte was blinded by a doctor trying to cure her cataract. According to her granddaughter Bernice, Charlotte died on an excursion train from Portland, OR to Seaside, OR. She died as a result of a choking accident. Feeling nauseous, she attempted to induce herself to vomit and subsequently choked to death. This obit was in the Astoria Daily Budget on Friday, July 5, 1912 Mrs. Charlotte Barton, a widow, residing at 214 East Thirty-third street, Portland, died at Seaside Wednesday afternoon, shortly after her arrival from Portland for the purpose of spending the Fourth of July with her daughter, Mrs. D.L. Rich, at the latter's cottage near Locksley hall. Mrs. Barton was 68 years of age, and appeared to be in excellent health when she left Portland, Wednesday morning. She was taken violently ill on the down trip, however, and had several bad spells on the train. The remains were prepared for shipment to Portland by Coroner Gilbaugh, and were taken to that city for burial. This is the death record for Charlotta A. Barton: She died July 3, 1912 in Seaside, female, white, widowed, born in Ohio, the daughter of William Barton, born in Indiana, mother not listed, died of valvular disease and contributing was "heart". Following letters published in the May 18, 1899 edition of the Belle Plaine Newspaper: "From S.F. Barton. This journal says that Forrest Barton, of the 20th Kansas Vol., who was wounded in the fighting at Caloocan, writes from Manila to his mother, Mrs. John I. Anderson of Wellington, as follows: Manila, P.I., March 27, 1899, Dear Mother: Well this is the first chance I have had to write to you since being brought to the hospital. You no doubt have read in the papers about me being wounded at Caloocan March 24th. I was shot through the calf of the left leg and am getting along all right and when this reaches you I will be about well. I will write a full account when I get stronger. I am mightilly swelled up over the fighting my regiment is doing and when we go back I will expect carpets laid in the streets for us. March 31, 1899, Dear Mother: I am still feeling better and today have no fever. I have been on liquid diet until today and am now on light diet. If it did not cost so much I would cable to you so you would not be worried, but it would cost me about twenty dollars. Our force is marching right on to victory, and I hear that the enemy's capital was captured today. Of course we have lots of wounded. I am in the second ward and there are about a hundred in it. I recieved your letter of February 12 the day I was wounded. I do not know the price of silk here, but will find out. It has now been raining for two days and it will be bad on the men at the front. Day before yesterday on man was killed and one wounded in our band; I was the first one to catch it. The boys are all nervy and stand their pain withour a groan. I have been in the operating room today to have my wound dressed, and it is no fun. April 2, 1899, Dear Mother: As mail will go out today, I will write a little more and close. I am still getting better, so don't worry about me. This is my ninth day here and I get fine treatment. It is nearly time to take me into the operating room to have my wound dressed, so I will close for this time with lots of love to you and regards to all, I enclose some flowers from my stand. I am sure that my regiment has had all the fighting they want and all the honor and glory that they will get. The State of Kansas can feel proud of the Twentieth Kansas regiment, and they deserve it. I feel so proud of the regiment because all the other regiments give us so much praise. With love, Forrest. From Lita Skillman Hardy: The reference to my grandfather going to retrieve documents after the '06 earthquake - that must have been my great-grandfather. I heard a different version of that story. The family home had been commandeered by the fire department to use as an R&R facility. It was one of the few homes undamaged by the quake. The family was told to evacuate the city - loaded up a wagon and walked out of the city to go to San Carlos where a friend lived. After they'd left the city limits, my great grandfather realized he had left a satchel of money at the house...the quake was on April 6, and since it was the first of the month he had just collected rent monies from various properties he owned. He figured they'd need that money to "start over," so he went back to SF - where officials told him he could not enter the city. I don't know if he haggled, bribed or sneaked his way in. But he did return to the house, stepping over sleeping firemen, and retrieved the stash! 1900 Eureka, Juab Co., Utah census: Barton, Forrest W M Apr 1868 32 Sing. She was married before to a rather prominent Hawaiian man - a cattleman or pineapple rancher?? Perhaps a Robinson. I think they lived on Molokai. The story that was whispered (remember, this was when I was a kid in the 50's) was that her husband was abusive. A household servant helped her make her "escape" in a rowboat in the middle of the night. She left with her infant daughter Janet (later adopted by my uncle) and rowed to Maui where she hid out in the Lahaina Hotel until a ship could take her to the mainland. I believe this was before WWII - Lydia was a bit older than Warren. I remember my mom telling me this, but it was never discussed by my aunt or uncle. I don't know how Lydia met Warren, and I presume they were married after the war - but I could be way off. They had no other children. Warren worked (after the Navy) for PG&E for years. He travelled all over northern California on big power construction jobs. Lydia was a librarian at the Berkeley library on College Avenue - right around the corner from their apartment. Their daughter Janet married Stanley Smith (date unknown) and they had a son Martin and a daughter Carol. They lived in the Sacramento area. I haven't seen those cousins or heard anything of them since Lydia died. Janet was rather sickly - that wasn't discussed much either - and she passed away perhaps in the 60's or early 70's. Good luck tracking down Marty and Carol! The Molokai story is one I always loved as a kid. Made my Aunt Lili into sort of a daring super hero to me. Quite a contrast to the way she appeared. She was the poster woman for librarians...petite, white hair up in a bun, soft-spoken. But she had a wicked sense of humor. As a kid, I could never imagine her "young"...she must have been prematurely white-haired...but it's all I ever saw. Same with Lolita...but she was almost an extra generation older than most of my friends' grandmas. More About Lydia L. Herbert was my uncle "Bud." Don't know where the nickname came from. His wife was "Aunt Betty." I suppose an "Elizabeth," but I don't ever recall hearing her given name. I don't know when they were married or where they are buried. I only heard of my uncle's death after the fact. They had two daughters - Susan and Carol. I don't know middle names or birthdates, but I know they are several years younger than me - probably born in the late 40's or early 50's. If I scrounge, I'll be able to find an address and phone # for Sue. She's living in the Tahoe area with husband #2. She has at least one grown child - possibly a grandchild. Carol was in the San Luis Obispo area last I heard - I don't believe she is married. Notes for Irene B. Leigh: Irene B Leigh Herbert (August 24, 1918 - May 20, 2006) Irene B. Leigh Herbert, age 87 years, passed away on Saturday May 20, 2006, in Cedar City, Utah. She was born on August 24, 1918, in Cedar City, Utah to Francis Webster and Ada Selena Bryant Leigh. She married Ralph Maxwell (Max) Herbert on March 15, 1941, in Cedar City, Utah. Irene was preceded in death by her husband Max, her brother Francis Bryant Leigh, and her sisters Amy Van Cott, Jean Leigh and Zelma Frandsen. She is survived by her sister Elaine Jensen, her sister-in-law Margaret Leigh, her sons Floyd and Michael Herbert, and her grandson Brian Herbert. In addition, she is survived by her nephews Kenneth, Calvin, Kevin, Carl and Kay C. Jensen and Chad Leigh, and her nieces Pamela Holmes, Jill Johnson, and Kathryn Quinn. Irene graduated from both high school and junior college at Branch Agricultural College (the predecessor of Southern Utah University) in Cedar City. After earning a Normal (teaching) Diploma from Utah State Agricultural College Normal School in Logan, Utah, she taught elementary grades in a tiny rural school in Newcastle, Utah. There she met her future husband, Max. Their life together took them to a succession of many homes in Utah and California because of Max’s work, first in the Army Air Corps during World War II, and later as a civil engineer in bridge construction for the state of California. Despite needing to cope with nearly annual changes of residence, Irene bore and raised two sons, supported Max’s endeavors and still managed to be of service to others. For example, she was a Den Mother for the Cub Scouts, and for many years was active in Primary both as teacher and secretary. In her later years, Irene took on the role of care-giver for both of Max’s parents, her sister Amy, and finally Max in his declining years. Although she was always ready to care for others, after Max’s death she was steadfastly independent and self-reliant to the end. Only after losing her eyesight did she need appreciable assistance, which was generously given by her sister-in-law, Margaret. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday May 27, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. at Southern Utah Mortuary. Interment will be in the Cedar City Cemetery, under the direction of Southern Utah Mortuary. But since we started taking foster babies, we just haven't been able to make the commitment. I always feel better with a little music in my life, so I'm glad to be doing bells this year. Roger Chandler7 Smith (Lottie Bernice6 Rogers, Mary Blanche5 Barton, Thomas Galloway4, James Galloway3, John2, Thomas1) was born 28 May 1915 in Piedmont, Alameda Co., California. He married Ina Cecelia Neeld 06 Mar 1940 in Hollywood, Los Angeles Co., California, daughter of Percy Neeld and Frances Kennedy. She was born 29 Jan 1920 in Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois, and died 07 Feb 2002 in Yucaipa, San Bernardino Co., California. Notes for Roger Chandler Smith: Origin of Chandler as a middle name for Roger Sr. and Roger Jr.: from Roger Smith Jr. : The "family story" surrounding Chandler is the following: When Gigi (Lottie Bernice Rogers) was in the hospital just after giving birth to a son was in the room with Arthur and the hospital administrator who was determining what name to put on the birth certificate. She supposedly had never known what Arthur's middle name was. He had always hated the name of Clarence. She wanted to use it for Roger's middle name also. As the story goes...Arthur was standing by the window of the hospital and looked out just at that moment and saw a "Chandler" automobile driving by and told her his middle name was Chandler. And that is how Roger Senior and Junior ended up with the middle name of Chandler. Notes for Ina Cecelia Neeld: Gene and I drove out on Thursday night (took us 3 hours in the traffic) to attend the visitation and rosary. Dad looks quite good and is getting along very well. According to him, Mom had an attack of her asthma on New Years Eve and was taken to the hospital. After she recovered from that attack was sent next door to the convalescent hospital for recovery. Dad would go there every day at lunch and dinner to spend time with her. It was on Feb 7 when she apparently had an attack shortly after dinner and could not be revived. They belonged to a very conservative catholic church (still in Latin) and that was the priest who came and said the rosary. This was all done at the mortuary and there were about 4 other couples there. Even Dad's old secretary came. She was the wife of his stockroom helper Louie. Greg and I went out on Friday morning to the service at the church. Onnolee and Sean also came. Dad was very excited to see his grandchildren and very glad to see Onnolee. We all sat with him up front during the church service. Then they had a small reception in the church hall with food and coffee. There were a lot of laughs over some old things we all remembered. Then we all drove out to the cemetery (Desert Lawn - Calimesa, California) for the burial. Sean, Greg, myself, Nash (good friend of Dad's), a former neighbor from Glendora and another man were the pall bearers. We then all went back to Dad's home and sat around and chatted for about another hour before we left. I gave Dad the addresses and phone numbers for everyone and he said he would put them in his address book. It included yours as well. My dad wants to get back in contact with everyone including you. Sometime give him a call. He is pretty independent, knows how to cook, still drives, has his church group of friends (I'm sure the widows will come out now) and his garden. That is about it. Gene and I will be going out to see him sometime in the future. We just need to talk and get back in touch. Roger C Smith Ina C. Smith SMITH -Ina C.
