Abstract of Graves of Revolutionary Patriots: Volume 4

WISWELL Jeremiah Capt South Bur Gr, Newton Highlands MA 29

Jeremiah was a Selectman of Newton from 1772 thru 1779. He must have been well off financially, for he lent money to the town in 1777 to pay the soldiers. Jeremiah was Captain fo the Newton East Company of Militia which was raised in 1773, organized on 2 January 1775, and disbanded shortly after the 19 April 1775 Battle of Lexington, when the men were absorbed into other units. It consisted of five officers and thirty two men who drilled one-half day each week, summer and winter, for which they were paid 8 pence each. When required the company expanded to seventy-six by means of volunteers. Among the regulars were Jeremiah's brothers Noah and Samuel, John and Ebenezer, and several of his brothers-in-law. Even his father, at the age of seventy-six, was a volunteer at the Battle of Lexington.
Capt. Jeremiah and his company attacked the British Lord Percy's reserves at Concord and hung on their flanks and rear until nightfall. The same men later held Dorchester Heights until the British evacuated Boston at which time they were attached to Col. Hatch's regiment. Jeremiah served on Col. Hatch's staff at the personal request of Gen. George Washington.
Beside those mentioned above, there were more than sixty Wiswalls from Massachusetts who served as patriots during the Revolutionary War.
