Notes for William Comstock:
ABOUT 1635, OR SHORTLY THEREAFTER, THERE CAME from England to the Massachusetts settlements one William Comstock. From whence he sailed, and on what ship, has not been ascertained. It is quite probable that with him were his wife Elizabeth and four, or possibly all five of his children. It is believed that he first sojourned in the vicinity of Watertown, Massachusetts, but that very shortly he transferred to Wethersfield, Connecticut.
It is a matter of record that he held lands on the Connecticut River in Wethersfield in the year 1641, and that these lands had been purchased from one Ric. Milles. Prior to that, he is recorded as having been one of the twenty-six men from Wethersfield in the expedition commanded by Capt. John Mason, that captured the Pequot Fort at Mystic, Connecticut, May 26, 1637, killing about five hundred Indians.
About 1650 he transferred to Pequot, now New London, where he had previously (1647) received a grant of land. At a town meeting held there in November, 1650, he voted to cooperate with John Winthrop to establish a corn mill, and in July 1651 he "Wrought on the mill dam" with Tabor and other inhabitants of New London. The old mill is still in existence.
In 1659 it is recorded that "with consent of my now wife Elizabeth" he sold property in New London. This probably indicates that Elizabeth was a second wife.
On February 25, 1661 or '62, "Old Goodman Comstock" was elected Sexton, "to order youth in the meeting house, sweep the meeting house and beat out dogs," at 40 shillings a year, to dig all graves, and have 4s for a grave for a man or woman, and 2s for children, to be paid by the supervisors.
The date of his death is unknown, but the History of New London states that he lived to old age, on Post Hill near the north corner of Williams and Vauxhall Streets.
Richard Mylls was plaintiff against "Willi Combstocke" and John Sadler, defendants, in an action for slander, Aug. 1, 1644, before the Court of Elections, Hartford, to the damage of 200 pounds.

Later he was of Lyme, Conn., and was a proprietor there in 1645. Court records now on file at the State Library, Hartford, show that his estate was settled June 4, 1681, and the widow made administratrix, and "desires Mr. Noyce (Noyes), her father Chappell, and Mr. Edward Shipman assist her." ii. | Samuel Comstock, born Abt. 1628 in Culmstock, Devonshire, England; died 09 Mar 1659/60 in Providence, Rhode Island; married Anne Tucker 1652 in Providence, Rhode Island. |
Notes for Samuel Comstock: Anne was living Feb. 10, 1667. She married (2nd) John Smith, the mason. The court records of Hartford, Conn., show that "Samuel Comstock gave recognizance March 1, 1648, for ten days of good behavior and for satisfying what damage Mr. Robins shall sustain for the want of his servant." When, in 1653, war with the Dutch seemed imminent, Samuel went on the "frigott Swallow" to Block Island and seized the goods and people there appertaining to a Dutch Captain Kempo Sybando, and took them to New London, apparently to Gov. John Winthrop. In the same year Samuel was in Rhode Island. Samuel Comstock bought of John Smith his house and lot in Providence, R. I., March 1, 1654. The Town Council of Providence took action about the estate of Samuel Comstock and John Smith, deceased, on March 9, 1660. On May 4, 1661, Anne Smith of Providence, widow of John Smith, formerly wife of Samuel Comstock, deceased, sold to Roger Mowry the house and home share of her husband, Samuel Comstock. It comprised four acres in a row of houses in the north part of Providence. Mr. W. W. Chapin states that it was near the corner of North Main and Abbott Streets, and probably bounded west by Sexton Street. |
Notes for Anne Tucker: Anne was living Feb. 10, 1667. She married (2nd) John Smith, the mason. |

John Elderkin the ancester of the family progenitor of all who bear the name, was born in England in the year 1612 he came to New England and first heard of Lynn Mass. in 1637. In 1641 he was at Deham Mass. in 1646 and Reading Mass. at Providence, R.I. in 1648; and at New London, Ct. in 1651 at all of these places he built a corn mill; and at New London a church. In 1663 he moved to Norwich Ct. where he also built the first mill and church in that town four years after the first settlement. In 1664 he moved to Hillingworth Ct. where he built a mill on the Manunkatesk river. His lot there he sold to William Wellman Feb. 28th, 1666 and his mill to Thomas Stevens Oct. 13, 1671. He then returned to Norwich, where he died June 13th, 1687 age 75 yrs.. His life was active and useful one, and he was evidently a man of energy and ability. His first wife's name was Abigail when and where they were married and date of her death are unknown. His second wife was Mrs. Elizabeth (Drake) Gaylord dau. of John Drake and widow of Wm. Gaylord of Widham, Ct. March 1, 1660. She died at Norwich, Ct. June 8, 1716 aged 95 years.

5709.Mary ???, born Abt. 1620 in England; died 16 Dec 1650 in Guilford, New Haven Co., Connecticut.
Notes for Thomas Jones:
Came to Guilford for free exercise of religious and perhaps political opinions. He subsequently returned to England.
From Genealogies of Connecticut Families, vol II:
Thomas Jones was one of the pioneer settlers of Guilford, and came with Mr. Whitfield. His name is sixth of the plantation Covenant signed June 1, 1689, on the passage of Mr. Whitfield's company to Guilford. He was evidently a young man, and probably was a relation of William Jones of New Haven. He appears to have been the first Marshal at Guilford, and to have held that office without a dissenting vote.Perhaps he was not married when he came to Guilford, though this is not certain. He married a Mrs. Mary Carter, probably a widow, with a daughter Mary Carter who subsequently married Samuel Ward of Branford, Jan 1, 1658
He was a witness in the first court, August 14, 1645, and was chosen or rather reappointed Marshal at a court held October 7, 1646.To this office he was annually rechosen until June 17, 1650, when George Bartlett was chosen to "to succeed in his room in that office when he removes," Thomas Jones to retain office until then. One June 9th, 1651, "George Bartlett was chosen to succeed brother Jones in the Marshal's place, when Providence shall remove him."Before June 10th, 1652, he had removed, and John Fowler was chosen Marshal. He left his property and family in Guilford, and may have intended to return. His wife died September 16, 1650, and probably soon afterward his place was sold and transferred to John Meigs. The deed was given many years later, however, on March 4, 1667/8 by Lt. William Chittenden, "the said Thomas Jones agent."Thomas Jones had died many years before that date.Mr. Davenport, in a letter to Gov. John Winthrop, Jr. dated about March 10, 1655, wrote as follows: "Mr. Disbrough and Goodman Jones died lately of the small pox in England or Scotland.
Thomas Jones evidently came to Guilford for a more free exercise of his religious and perhaps political opinions, and returned to England when his friends came into power. When mr. Whitfield tendered his reasons to the Church of Guilford, Feb. 20, 1649/50, for his removal, and enquiry was made of every man concerning his particular ability in paying to the ministers for the present, and in probability to continue according to ordinary providence, "Thomas Jones professed his willingness and hoped to be able to continue his present payments."
His home lot lay next that of John Bishop, on the east side of the Green, and he held in addition 6 acres of upland and swamp near by, 4 1/2 acres of upland in the East Creek Quarter, and 5 1/2 acres of marshland there. In the Neck he held 9 3/4 acres of upland, and also owned 8 acres of marsh at "Salt-Holes."
On June 12, 1656, Mary Carter demanded £40 sterling from Thomas Jones's estate, which the court ordered to be paid her. This sum consumed all the inventory but £1.3.8, which was ordered to be kept for the children.
