" DIED

SMITH-At the residence of S. W. Smith, her son, in Lindina, April 18, 1885, Mrs. Eliza Smith, aged 74 years, 6 months, wife of Rev. Joseph Smith.
Mrs. Smith was born in Birmingham, England, September 14, 1810, married to the husband, with whom she has lived more than half a century, May 28, 1830. The family came to America in 1842, landing in Milwaukee, July 4th of that year. They lived in Racine County, twenty years and have since resided in Mauston. Philip Smith, enlisted infantry of the 22nd Reg., Co. H in Caledonia on Aug. 14, 1862 and died Dec. 16, 1862 in Nicholasville, KY of disease. I took the liberty of contacting our burial registration office, (608) 266-3602, which holds a card file of all recorded burials of United States veterans buried in the state of Wisconsin. They do have a card on one Philip S. Smith of the 22nd Reg., Co. H who died Dec. 16, 1862, buried in Evergreen Cemetery in the town of Lindina, WI, Juneau County, Lot 10. Next of kin was Fred Smith of Merrill, WI and there is a monument headstone. However, the personnel in the burial registrations office said that the regiment, company, date of enlistment and date of death information had at some point in time been crossed out with a pencil on the card.
