JOSEPH T. SMITH, one of the best known pioneers of Juneau county, and an esteemed resident of Lindina township, was born in England, January 10, 1833, and is a son of Joseph and Eliza Smith. A somewhat extended sketch of the family is given in the biography of Samuel W. Smith, an elder brother of the subject of this notice.
Our subject was about nine years of age when his parents emigrated to America. His early education and training was received in the eastern part of Wisconsin, where he resided until 1857. He then located land in Summit township, on which he settled, but which he afterward sold, and returning to Racine he worked for a time at his trade as a mechanic, at which he was very skillful, and for which he had inherited a particular talent. Later, he removed to Juneau county, where, about a year later, her purchased his present farm, on which and his family have since resided. This contains about 250 acres, and, when he bought it, was all wild land, but by industry and careful management it is now under a fine state of cultivation. Aside from the general products of the farm Mr. Smith devotes considerable attention to the cultivation of small fruits, of excellent quality. He, however, spends most of his time renovating his various buildings, leaving the management of the farm to his sons. Mr. Smith erected his present fine residence, and has put up other buildings on his place.
He was married in Racine county, to Martha M. Freeman, a highly esteemed lady, and a daughter of Judge Jared Freeman, an honored pioneer of that county, who was for years county Judge, and held other responsible official positions. Judge Freeman died about 1860, and his worthy wife has also been dead many years. Mrs. Smith is a native of Chantaugua county, New York.
Mr. and Mrs. Smith have two surviving children, Ernest P. and Earl W., both of whom are still at home. They lost their four oldest children in early infancy, all of whom were boys.
This worthy couple owe their prosperity entirely to their own industry and economy, and richly deserve all the gifts which Dame Fortune has seen fit to bestow upon the. Hospitable and courteous, which are but the outward evidence of a kindly heart, they have gained the universal esteem of their fellow citizens.
