| We are at a standstill re the BARTON family:PETER BARTON: my Gr.gr.Grandfather was in the 1810 Cayuga Co.NY Census living in Scipio with a young large family. His dau. Malinda ( my namesake) was born in 1809 there. The family moved to Chenango County ( N.Pharsalia) after purchasing over 300 acres in 1811. Peter was said to be very interested in the education of his children. Also that he was a good judge of horses and cattle ---perhaps his livelihood. When he was well advanced in years, he moved out of the County. So, there is no Death or Burial Records here to help us.We do not have his wife's name either.Malinda, my Gr.Grandmother married Hiram Frink in N.Pharsalia and raised a large family. His parents had come in from Stonington, Conn. after the Rev.War. One of their sons, they named Barton Frink. He named his son, James, maybe for an Uncle---a brother of Malinda's. ( Found a James Barton living in German, Chenango County in 1830 Census, near Pharsalia , with a young family. He would have been the right age to be a brother of Malinda. By 1840, he had moved away!!ELIJAH POWELL SR. :My Gr.gr.gr.Grandfather Elijah Powell Sr. was born about 1771. He died at the ripe old age of 97 in Richford, Tioga County, NY in June 1869 at his Dr. son's home ( Elijah Jr.)He married Janette "Jane" Templer ( Templar ) dau. of Jonathan of Duanesburgh, Albany Co. NY. They moved to Sherburne, Chenango Co. NY with their family. A purchase of 100 acres with Fr. in law, Jonathan Templer which was later sold and by 1804, the family moved to East Pharsalia NY, in the same County. They had a large family of sons: Samuel, Jonathan, Elijah Jr.( later a well known MD in Owego and Richford, Tioga Co. NY ), Isaac T. ( 1810-1876) with "Major" on his tombstone in East Pharsalia Cemetery. Daughters were: Betsey, Rebecca ( m. Elijah Gardner of Chenango County ---they moved west), Amanda and Lucinda. Some distant relatives thought in the 1930's that Elijah Sr. may have been born in Kinderhook, Columbia Co. NY.but this has never been proven. Though I have worked on Family Roots almost 20 years now, we just cannot get back further or connect this family with any of the Long Island Powells or ones in Mass. either. Are there any researchers out there working on these families? We are eager to exchange info and to meet descendants of these two ancestors. It really would mean a lot to us and our children and grandchildren. Unfortuanately, my parents and most of their siblings are now gone! |
