The Matthew Waack Family Home PageUpdated July 11, 2006 |
Henry Waack (Matthias Henrich Marius Waack) was a sailor in the merchant marines in Kiel, GE. His wife Fredericke Kähler was a cook for a baron. When Charles was eight (1880), his father came home in the middle of the night, gathered up his family, and headed for America... due, some say to a new military conscription law. Thet left their residence in Neustadt in Holstein, Germany and in Hamburg boarded the steam ship "Cimbria". They arrived in New York, came through Ellis Island, and took a train to Grand Mound, Iowa. There was Kähler family settled there prior. Charles Henry Waack, my Great Grandfather, was the oldest son of Henry. One of his brothers (Gustav) died shortly after the 12 week crossing of the Atlantic. His name is on the manifest. His 3 other brothers and 3 sisters grew up on a farm NE of Grand Mound, Clinton County, Iowa. I presently have about 5850 names in my FTM file.
