In 1371 Dona Constanza, daughter of the deceased and dethronedDon Pedro I King of Castile [AKA Pedro The Cruel] went to England tobecome the bride of King Edward III's son, John of Gaunt, Duke ofLancaster. Among the young Castilian ladies of aristocratic birth whoaccompanied her was Dona Sancha de Ayala, a daughter of Don Diego Gomezde Guzman de Toldeo and his wife, Dona Ines de Ayala.
Circa 1373 Dona Sancha married Sir Walter Blount, an EnglishKnight, and a member of the Blounts of Sodington, County Worcester. OnFebruary 26th in the first year of King Richard III's reign [1378], theDuke of Lancaster, who claimed the thrones of Castile and Leon in rightof his wife, granted to Sir Walter and Sancha for their good service tohim an annuity of one hundred marks a year. This grant was confirmed"for their lives in survivorship" by King Richard, April 26, 1399.Records reveal payments to Dona to Sancha at various times; once (2January 1380) her name was associated with that of "Phelippe Chaucy",i.e. Philippa Chaucer, wife of the author of The Canterbury Tales, byGeoffrey Chaucer. On this occaision she was described by the Duke ofLancaster as "our very dear attendant" (nostre treschere compaigne) "DameSenche Blount".
Sir Walter Blount figured quite prominently in the affairs ofEngland during the reigns of Edward III and Henry IV. He was a closeassociate of John Of Gaunt, and the latter made Blount an executor of hislast will and testament and also left him a small legacy. In 1367, SirWalter Blount accompanied The Black Prince (Edward) and the Duke ofLancaster "(John Of Gaunt) on an expedition into Spain to aid Don Pedro I"The Cruel" King Of Castile, and was at the Battle of Marjara on 3 April1367 which restored Don Pedro to his throne. Sir Walter fell at theBattle of Shrewsbury, on 21 July 1403, wherein, being standard bearer, hewas arrayed in the same style of armour as his royal master and was slainin single combat by Earl Douglas who beleived he was in combat with theking himself. Sir Walter was slain in the course of the battle ofShrewsbury, July 21, 1403, and Shakespeare, who drew his facts fromHolinshed's "Chronicles" immortalized him in his "Henry IV though hecalled him "Sir Walter Blunt."
In 1406, three years after her husband's death, Dona Sanchafounded a chantry in the Hospital of St. Leonard, Alkmonton, countyDerbyshire. Hermother, Ines de Ayala, by whose surname Sancha was known, was descendedfrom the great House of Ayala of Toledo, which traced its pedigree in themale line to the House of Haro, Lords of Biscay. the proof of Sancha'sparentage is contained in a family genealogy which was started about 1385by her maternal uncle, Pedro Lopez de Ayala, Grand Chancellor OfCastile. He stated that Dona Sancha "married a Knight of England, whowas called Sir Walter Blount."
Walter Blount and Dona Sancha were the parents of twochildren, in addition to the aforementioned daughter, Constance, theywere also the parents of Sir Thomas Blount.
