- George Mercer Salter (1859-1920) Navarro Co., Tx. (139 KB)
In 1887 Emma Maud Salter was born to George Mercer Salter & Lucy Love Salter and as a child remembers when the family went to West Texas to farm and lived in a soddy.Sod is, literally, dirt cheap and generally available. It is warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Sod is fire-proof, allowing families on the great plains to huddle in their soddys as prairie fires swept their farms. Sod was so ideal for building that photos taken in the latter nineteenth century, when the railroads had made wood available on the prairie, show families build barns and other outbuildings from wood while still living in their soddys. - The Home of Pender P. Confederate Cartridge Box is 3 inches deep by 9 inches longby 5 inches tall and carried minnie balls, powder as well as the valuables of Thomas Jefferson Knight throughout the Civil War. The bottom photograph shows where he carved his named into the inner lid of the case. On the inner lid it shows the case was made in Missouri. This was given to me (Ronald Ellis Wade) by my Uncle Burchell Wade, the son of Whitfield Anthony Wade and grandson of Thomas Jefferson Knight along with all the other papers belonging to T. J. Knight and Whit and Joseph Berry Wade. Inside this little bag were the photographs I have of Thomas Jefferson Knight with his wife Martha Ann Sanders Knight as well as the June 13, 1863 letter he wrote to Martha while serving in Company G, 17th Cavalry, Moore's Regiment in the war. Other valuables inside included original deeds to him and his wife from Simeon Knight, Richard Sanders and many others as well as a proposition signed by every living child of Knight. The Confederate infantryman carried forty rounds of longarm ammunition in a similar cartridge box. Many of those who received Enfield rifled muskets received copies of British army cartridge boxes. The rest received cartridge boxes that were copies of the Union army black box, which had straps on the back so that it could be carried either on a strap from the left shoulder to the right hip or on a waist belt at the centre of the back. The Union army model held forty of the paper-wrapped cartridges in two 20-round tin containers. The box had a small picket beneath the flap, which held musket tools and cleaning equipment. That is probably what model this is. - Early Photo of Children of Whitfield A. Wade (26 KB)
