Peter Sebastian Roggemann (son of Sebastian Peter Roggemann and Elizabeth Forschback) was born 9 October 1886 in Jamaica, Queens, NY, and died 12 July 1981 in Huntington, Suffolk Co, LI, NY. He married (1) Theodora Margaret Mary Burke on 12 July 1915 in NY?, daughter of Charles Francis Paul Burke and Henrietta Elizabeth Genevieve Blume. He married (2) Lillian Irene Reiser on 2 May 1973 in Huntington, NY, daughter of William Reiser and Maggie McCormick.

Includes NotesNotes for Peter Sebastian Roggemann:

When Sebastian died in 1902, Peter was almost 12. He quit school & went to earn a living

According to Helen Roggemann Bridges:

Godfather: Peter Forschback? at St Joseph's (Now St Elizabeth's)

Grandpa Roggemann used to play baseball for a local team.
They got paid and played against Major Baseball leagues.
He was in AAA in 1908 (?N.Y. Giants??) and they were semi-pro.

---
From Peter Roggemann:
Grandpa did play baseball. I have a studio type picture of him (taken out of doors) in a baseball uniform, holding a 'three finger' glove (actually has a fourth finger for the thumb; I think you put the index and middle finger in one of the glove fingers). The uniform has a large 'B' on the left chest side of the shirt. There is no indication of when the photo was taken. He looks very young; he is wearing a ring on the ring finger of his left hand, but I can't recall if he wore a wedding ring. In any case he appears younger than 30 (but he always looked younger than he was!)
He spoke often of playing baseball; my recollection is that he played on an organized team which occasionally would play barnstorming major leaguers, for which his team did get a cut of the gate. He mentioned a field just north of Jamaica Avenue, near Cypress Hills cemetery as one venue for these games. (I think a high school was built over that field).
I have a feeling he was a pretty good player. I watched and listened to quite a few professional games with him. I don't know what team he rooted for, if any, but he was very quick to comment on individual performances - somewhat intolerant of throwing to the wrong base or base running gaffes. He also coached me a bit, particularly on throwing.
In the mid 1960's he would vacation at the lake in Pennsylvania where my family vacationed. Even at 80 he would pitch softball practice and take an occasional swing.
I don't remember hearing the name of any team he played on in his youth.

----------------
May 2003 from Aunt Gert:
The Roggemann children numbered 9 & were all taught to play baseball. They played as a team against neighborhood kids.

May 2003 from Uncle Charlie:
Dad played 3rd base for the Park Bank Team...Uncle Tom Burke was the manager. They often played & rehearsed at Dexter Park which is now Franklin K Lane. He does not know anything about "skeeters"

Theo Burke & John Burke were siblings
Peter Roggemann & Emma Roggemann were siblings

Theo Burke (John's sister) married Peter Roggemann (Emma's brother) 12 Jul 1915
John Burke (Theo's brother) later married Emma Roggemann (Peter's sister) 13 Oct 1919 ("The Utica Kernans" wrongly has 1917). John & Emma moved to Brazil soon afterwards.

----------------------------------------------
from Helen Roggemann Bridges:

During World War I -- Florence and Arthur Aubry had a large house near Rockaway. Peter Sr. and Theodora went to live there as did Gertrude Burke and Theodora Burke. After the war was over Peter and Theo went to live in the big house in Ozone Park.

---------------------------------------------
[JJW]

The ancestral home was originally owned by the Forschbacks.
The house was just off the SE corner of Atlantic Ave & present-day 80th St (just west of Rockaway Blvd) in what is now Ozone Park - between what is now 80th & 81st St. Its address at one time was 924 Halifax (now 81st St)

The earlier house, like others in the neighborhood, was a country farm house ( the Forschback property in the 1873 map is on SW corner of Atlantic & present day 80th St). The house burned down (when?). One story is that a kitchen coal stove stood on 4 legs; one leg was kicked, the stove toppled, & the house was destroyed.

{However, there's also a story of Peter Nicholas Burke (in a fit of temper) kicking over a stove (somewhere?). Peter Nicholas Burke happened to work in stove manufacturing (or sales of stoves). However, Peter Nicholas Burke died in 1905 - before Peter & Theodora met (sometime around 1910). Were toppling stoves a common occurrence in those days? Peter & Theodora had an extended engagement until Peter was sure his mother & sisters were secure. They married in 1915.}

Back to the Forschback fire:
Elizabeth was so frightened (but thankful that no one was hurt) that when they rebuilt a large 22 room house (across the street from the old one west of 80th St [called Spruce on the 1873 map, Aliba St on the 1910 map, and Hudson St on the 1913 map), every room had a door or window in each of the four walls. Some say there were at least 2 exit doors from every room -- in any case, an escape in any direction from any emergency. With 22 rooms, they surely often had company. At that time you could look out south windows and see over the farms to Jamaica Bay (about 4 miles away today - but probably less before Jamaica Bay was partially filled in). Looking at the 1873 map, there was very little at all to the south. The 1910 map shows little but grassy marshland south of "Freeland Ave" all the way to "Grassy Bay (Jamaica Bay") - just a road to an earlier Aqueduct racetrack & and a "South Road" beside the water conduit (Aqueduct).

Ferry Street (now 86th St) does not seem to go must past Liberty Ave (less than 1 mile) - and north it is stopped by Forest Park. Perhaps it took a turn east or westward to an inlet (since filled in) & the "new" South Road displaced it. Ferry Street is a remembered name & MAY have been the address of some other ancestral residence. << INDEED, it shows on Peter's draft registration in 1917. >>

Originally the house faced east - what is now 81st Street. After renovations (perhaps someone knows the year -- AFTER the 1930 census), the front door was moved to the west side - what is now 80th St. On the 1920 census it is 924 Halifax & on the 1930 census is on - and still facing 81st St. (On the 1873 map, 81st street does not yet exist.)

Peter Sr. & Theo's family was living there for the 1920 census. After Elizabeth Forschback died in 1920, they continued to reside there until about 1948. (There are stories of some disagreement over the inheritance of the 22 room home.)

The name of the town was variously called Union Course (the name of the LIRR station -- for the the Union Course racetrack north of Atlantic Ave), Woodhaven Village, & Ozone Park. When the LIRR eliminated grade crossings & dug a trench for the tracks, it took over Atlantic Ave. In the 1930s & 1940s Atlantic Ave was pretty much just an intermittent side-street next to the LIRR. The tracks became the boundary between Woodhaven on the north side, and Ozone Park on the south side. The LIRR tracks were put underground in the late 1940s; Atlantic Ave became extremely wide, the boundary remained.

Several grandchildren lived in the home after WW2.
About 1948 the ancestral homestead was sold to a man named Sol, who renovated the house for returning veterans. In making it a multi-family dwelling, he likely had many of those extra "fire" exits removed.
Several grandchildren (including myself) continued to live there even after the sale.
I have exactly 11 to 14 memories from living there (until I was 32 months old) - almost all of them outdoors.
I say 11 to 14 because 3 of those MIGHT have been at my next residence.
In all these memories, the main entrance is facing West. I remember the renovations too.
When I lived there, there was a place that sold boats on the triangular corner (just North of the house). Numerous boats were on display in the "yard".
Across the street were several shops - a butcher shop (where my sister Lynn & I used to get a free slice of bologna each visit) and a deli (Rudi's, where we'd get a pretzel stick - don't think that was free though). There were white picket fences along our side, that I liked to play with a stick, but Mom would not allow.
I wondered how far the pickets would keep going - it seemed there was no end, yet had to be. Never got to the end though. We moved away 10 August 1949 - I was 32 months old.
The house was demolished in the mid 1950s or so & a 3 storey factory, warehouse, or office-type building was erected.
On Google-Earth, it looks like a car lot is there now - but that could just be parking.

-----------------------------

Grandma Burke lived on Macon St. She introduced Grandma Theo to Grandpa Peter on June 20, 1910.
Grandma Burke (likely Jane Elizabeth Quin Burke) knew Grandpa through Uncle Tom - they both worked at the bank
According to some stories, the original introduction was for Peter & Florence.

Margaret is Margaret Roggemann, Elizabeth's daughter

Elizabeth 22 is Elsie

Emma, 59, must be Sebastian's sister - but is the age right, or were they not twins?
1900 Census says Sebastian & Margaret were both born Mar 1862 (making her 57 for this census)
Elsewhere 23 March 1863 is given as Sebastian's birthdate
To be 59, Emma would have to be born 1860 or Jan 1861
Perhaps they were not twins & 1900 census was wrong
Emma dies 1 June 1923

This is the house between 80th & 81st Streets in Ozone Park.
81st Street used to be called Halifax Street before the 1930s

Peter, Theo, Peter Jr., John, & Paul were in the census at Theo's father's house in 1920 - so 3 of them were counted twice.

The railroad ran where Atlantic Avenue now is, & a station called Union Course served a racecourse for trotting races that was located just north of Atlantic Avenue in Woodhaven. The entire area became known as Union Course, but the railway became a boundary between Woodhaven & Ozone Park.
