Notes for DANIEL FRANCIS WAGNER: TV Reporter/Anchor/Producer since1980. Peace Corps Volunteer in the Central African Republic (1987-1989). Produced television documentaries on AID/Assistance projects in Africa. Also produced a national radio program in the Central African Republic each week in the tribal language "Sango". Programs will continue to be aired in Central Africa for about 20-30 years to help educate local people on health, sanitation and agricultural topics. Returned to West & East Africa in 1990 while working as a Field Producer for the "World Monitor" newscast on The Discovery Channel. Produced a series of non-traditional news stories on the African continent for Discovery. Topics included the AIDS epidemic in Tanzania -- which later became a front page story in The New York Times. Other news stories Dan produced included; how tourism has displaced hundreds of traditional Masai warriors who lived in the Ngorogoro Crater. The Tanzanian government forced them to move to an area where tourists wouldn't see how "primative" they are. Other topics included the Nigerian elections, attempts to teach birth control to teenage, tribal mothers and the profile of a popular female singer in Lagos, Nigeria who is using her popularity to sing (teach) about human rights. Moved to Moscow, Russia in the summer of 1992 to become the first Western television consultant to advise one of the two Russian TV networks. Produced Russia's first nationally televised, live broadcast of the results of a US Presidential election (Clinton 1992). Reorganized the news gathering operation of the state-run Russian Television & Radio Company. Trained news anchors and reporters on Western journalistic ethical standards. Developed a barter advertising system to update the antiquated news gathering system within Russian Television, and streamlined operations and communications among the networks 375 news bureaus around the world. Stayed in Russia for nearly two years and a half years freelancing for a broadcast group called "Internews" which is uniting nearly 400 independent television stations across the 11 time zones of the former Soviet Union -- into the first private network in Russian history (the foundation of a Public Broadcasting Service similar to PBS in the US). Has a working knowledge of the Russian language, French, Sango (an African tribal dialect which is a version of Swahili), Spanish, and would like to learn German and Chinese if I can get over my dislike for studying grammar! Most embarassing moment: "One day, when I was getting ready for work, my cat (who was sleeping on top of my roommate's telephone answering machine) accidently put it's paw on the memo record button -- while I was in one of my singing around the house moods. When my roommate checked his messages later that day, he had three messages: 2 from friends of his who called, and the third message was an hour and a half of me singing my lungs out while gettting ready for work. My roommate who was a disc jockey on a popular radio station -- threatened to play the tape on-the-air for all of South Florida to hear! |
