| Most of this research was done by Esther Waggoner Covalt, Annabelle Ora Waggoner Munsey, and Mae Waggoner. I have done the newer stuff and the pictures. Mae Waggoner wrote a book" History of the Waggoner", which is no longer in print, but Amazon.com does mention it. In 1673 our name was spelled Wagner, in the fourth generation you will see it is spelled with 2gg's and an O (Waggoner), until the 8th generation when it's spelled with 1 G (Wagoner).Story goes that Thomas Waggoner from the 6th generation, was in a train robbery and when he went to put up his hands the robber shot off one of his arms. So it was just easier for Thomas to write one g instead of 2. When some of the Wagoner's found this out changed their name back to 2 g's. My Dad (Thomas Nelson Wagoner 9th generation) said it would be to much trouble and paper work. Which is what most of them said. I have no information on this either way. This is what I have been told over the years. |
