The McDowell's came to McMinnville,TN. from N.C. in the late 1700's. Luke McDowell b.1786 married Fannie Field b. 1793,from Ky. They had 6 kids. Their son William Field McDowell m. Deborah Test (second wife) about 1844. They settled in Massac County, Ill. They had 6 kids. Their son John Benjamin McDowell b. 1845 m Mahala I. Odum b.1859 (third wife). They settled in Belnap, Il. where he was a school teacher and sometime Judge.
Mahala's gr.grandparents were Wiley Moses Odum from N.C. who m. Sarah Kitchens from Smith County, TN.

The earliest Burns I can document is Elijah B. Burns b. 1813 in TN. who m. Delila ? born in 1814 in TN. Elijah B. was a carpenter. They had Marcus Henry Burns after moving to Johnson County, Il. He was their 3rd child. Marcus m. Martha Jane Wilhelm. Martha Jane's grandparents were John Wilhelm who m. Mary Boston both lived in N.C. before coming to Illinois.
