Hi everyone! I am researching two surnames. WILLIAM MCCLAREN and wife MARGARET JOHNSTON found in Allegheny City (now part of Pittsburg) Pennsylvania in 1870's. They had four children - John William bd. 2-23-1869, James Thomas, bd. 10-4-1871, Rogert G. bd 4-11-1874, and Margaret Mary bd. 10-1-1876. James, Robert, and "Maggie" were indentured 12-6-1883 from the Pittsburgh and Allegheny Protestant Orphan asylum (also called Green Orphan Asylum) to Mr. A.F. Carithers of Linton, IA in Des Moines County. Mr. Carithers was a farmer. In the Pittsburgh City Directory from 1868-1878 there is a William McClaren listed as a Machinest (blacksmith?) who lived at 5 Lidlie Ave, Allegheny, PA. Have no idea if he is connected to this family or not. The orphanage is now a private school but has lost all the records from that time. The courthouse is also unable to help me. At James' death, brother William was listed in Pittsfield, MA and brother Robert was listed in Newton, Iowa.

Another mystery is HARVEY SEXTON born 2-17-1817 in Pennsylvania but first found in Knox County, ILL in 1865's. Married twice - first to E.Octavia Hamlin who died in 1852, and 2nd to Harriet Fox from New York. Harvey was a allopathis Physician. Reportedly went to California during the gold rush then returned to Ill. Have no information on his parents or any siblings. Several children, but the only lines that continued were his sons, Miles, Harry S. Sexton, and Oscar Fox Sexton (with one daughter Velma Barzee who died in California - unknown if she had children) and Harvey's daughter Martha A. who married Myron Calkins and moved to KS. They had five children, including a son Allen who had three children, two daughters and one son. One of Myron's children was reportedly a sheriff at one time in Kansas.

Please contact me with any information you might have and I am more than willing to share any information I have. Thank you.
