We are currently entering an extensive genealogy of the John Wagner Sr (Waggoner) family (1758), who came to this country from Wasselone, Alsace, France. He was born about 20 miles northwest of Strasbourg, Bas-Rhin, Alsace, France. He left with LaFayette for America as a member of four divisions of Alsatians, with six other divisions from France. John enlisted, at or near Reading, Pennsylvania, in the Revolutionary War in Valentine Creager’s Company as a private on 10/3/1776. John and Adam were two of the sixty-eight privates ( Maryland Archives, Volume Eighteen, Pages 71 and 72 ). He then joined Captain Bartholemew Von Heer’s Company. John served as a private in Captain Von Heer’s Troop of Horsemen and in General George Washington’s Life-Guard. He was with the French General LaFayette, on the day General Cornwallis surrendered He initially resided in the Reading, PA - Hagerstown, MD area. The following entry, under “Marriage Records of Washington County” as taken from “Maryland Marriages” pages 226-241 states: John Waggoner to Elizabeth Litch ( probably Leach ), July 18, 1785; by Rev. Jacob Weimer, Lutheran minister. They resided in the vicinity of Hagerstown, Maryland for about twelve years; when in 1797, they moved to Bedford County, Pennsylvania; which lies between Cumberland, Md and Altoona, Pa. In 1803, the family then moved to Perry County, Ohio. They settled in Section Five, Reading Township, about two and one-half miles northwest of the present village of Somerset; 50 miles east of Columbus, where the bulk of the Wagner family was established.
