Notes for IDA JEANETTE QUICK: Ida married David Isaiah Jones of Harrison Co., TX. She bought land in James, Upshur Co., TX. and there they made their home. Several members of the Jones family, including myself, still own part of that land. ( the community was renamed Diana, TX. ) She and Dave had ten children. "Granny" was almost totally deaf, and lost her life when her home burned and she was unable to escape. Her grown sons made several trips back into the burning house trying to rescue her, but were unable to find her in her room. It was in January, snow was on the ground. The fire was most likely caused from a spark from the fireplace. |

Notes for BERNICE WILKINS: Received from Ray Wilkins written by Bernice Wilkins Day in 1974 "I'm writing all I know of the Wilkins family record. My information has been gained from what my elders related to me and what I lived and experienced. Being the oldest of my father's children, my memory goes back a bit beyond my living brothers and sisters: hence my reason for writing what I know and if any of the younger members care to trace back further, this written information may give some clues with which to begin." " Wilkins is an English name and the first family immigrated from England to the then American Colonies, settling along the southern or mid-Eastern coast. Perhaps Virginia or as far as North Carolina. There was a Captain James Wilkins of Revolutionary War history who may have been an ancestor. I can only start my record with the James Wilkins who was my great Grandfather, who married Mary Woff or Wolf who was of Dutch ancestry I was told." " My great Grandfather, James Wilkins and Mary Woff Wilkins had the following children: Samuel, Scrivner, Solomon, and Alexander, the youngest child who died when a young child. The daughters were Emily and Mary. Samuel was a river or steamboat pilot, living in Paducah, KY. I was told he married a widow Washington who had a small daughter. Scrivner settled in the state of Texas. Do not recall hearing his wife's name but was told he had seven or eight children and all died in a malarial epidemic. I heard his relatives say after losing his children he was never known to smile again." " James Wilkins and Mary Wolf Wilkins, probably in the later part of the 1700's migrated to north Mississippi and settled near the present site of Granada. I believe they called this locality " Old Middleton". Emily, the oldest daughter married Middleton Cole. The younger daughter of James and Mary Wilkins married Robert Kendall." " James Wilkins died, I presume when his son Solomon, was born in 1832, was a lad of five or six years. James was buried at "Old Middleton" ( near the present city of Grenada, Miss. ) In a few years afterwards, Mary Woff Wilkins married a widower who had a family and had lost his wife some time before. William McLellan carried his second wife and her children, possibly Mary and Solomon, to live on a farm he owned in Holmes County. They had a daughter Elizabeth and a son Dallas to grow to adulthood and who married and had families of their own. Both Dallas and Solomon were soldiers in the Civil War. Solomon ( my Grandfather ) was in Company A, 38th Mississippi Regt. Forrest' Calvary." |
