Notes for J
UDGE JOHN QUICK:
Judge John Quick's father was a Revolutionary War soldier who died bet. 1780 - 1781 while being transported via boat to a new battle locality. The ship disappeared and he never saw his twins. Their mother died shortly after their birth, and since there was no trace of their father, the government paid various families to raise the twins. One such person was William Fry of Kent County, MD who had the children in 1784. Later Henry Eads assumed the more permanent home for Judge John Quick.

He and his family homestead 157.55a. SW quarter of Section 2, Twp. 8 Brookville, IN. Range 2 West
It was officially recorded Aug. 14, 1810. He completed his homestead when he entered, Dec. 22, 1814, the SE quarter of Section 2, 158.30 a. This property supplied John's livelihood until his death, but he dealt in minor real estate transactions in the late 1820's and 1830's.

Judge John Quick was the first probate Judge in Franklin Co., assuming this position when the county was first formed in 1811. John was then commissioned a Justice of the Peace of Franklin Co. IN. by the Territorial Governor, Thomas Posey, on Dec. 10, 1813. This position was held for several years.

He was commissioned an Associate Judge of Franklin Co., on May 26, 1828, the first of three terms.
Judge John was fortunate to receive some formal education. This being the reason for his political success. He realized the value of an education and each of his sons attended school. The oldest, Elijah, in his teens, traveled some distance to school. So far in fact, that in 1819 he had to get a letter of dismissal and a letter of recommendation from his church. As Brookville grew, a school was formed.

Judge John Quick died at his home after an illness of eight weeks. He is buried in the Old Quick Burial Grounds, Brookville, Franklin Co., IN. next to his wife, and near her parents.
His estate left each of his ten children $10, 843.00 ; history remembers him as a "leader among the men of his time." and "a man who stood for the best interest of the county in everything."

Notes for M
